Elisabeth Charlotte, die spätere Herzogin von Orleans, ist einer großen Leserschaft vertraut als "Liselotte von der Pfalz", dem Namen, den sie als junge Prinzessin führte. Was sie bekannt gemacht hat, sind die fast dreitausend Briefe, die von ihr erhalten sind und mit denen sie der Geschichtswissenschaft ungewollt einen kostbaren Dienst erwiesen hat, worauf schon der bürgerliche Historiker Leopold Ranke aufmerksam gemacht hat. Wohl von keiner Persönlichkeit der zweiten Hälfte des 17. und des beginnenden 18. Jahrhmiderts haben wir ein so breites Lebenszeugnis, das von den wichtigsten Staatsaktionen ebenso wie von den intimsten Sphären Kunde gibt und damit ein Bild jener Zeit enthüllt, das wir aus anderen Quellen sehr viel mühsamer rekonstruieren müssen. - Elisabeth Charlotte, Prinzessin von der Pfalz, genannt Liselotte von der Pfalz (* 27. Mai 1652 in Heidelberg; 8. Dezember 1722 in Saint-Cloud bei Paris), war Herzogin von Orléans und Schwägerin von König Ludwig XIV. von Frankreich. Literarische und historische Bedeutung erlangte sie u. a. durch ihren Briefwechsel. . Leben in Frankreich: Liselotte wurde 1671 aus politischen Gründen mit dem Bruder Ludwig XIV., Herzog Philipp I. von Orléans verheiratet. Am französischen Hofe war sie bald nach ihrer Hochzeit recht isoliert. Gründe dafür waren die offene Homosexualität ihres Mannes,[3][4] der mit ihr wie mit seiner ersten Frau Henrietta Anne Stuart zwar mehrere Nachkommen zeugte, ansonsten aber ein weitgehend eigenständiges, von seinen Günstlingen beeinflusstes Leben im Palais Royal führte. Anfangs stand sie noch in der Gunst des Königs, der ihre Spontaneität und Natürlichkeit schätzte. Er nahm sie zu stundenlangen Jagden und Ausritten mit. Des Weiteren hatten die beiden das gemeinsame Hobby des Sammelns von Münzen, Medaillen und Gemmen, beide liebten sie Komödien und Opern. Liselotte verwöhnte ihn mit Delikatessen aus ihrer Heimat wie pfälzischen Leberwürsten und saurem Hering. Inwieweit ihm dies mundete, ist nicht überliefert.[1] Liselotte erkannte allerdings die gesellschaftliche Stellung der Madame Maintenon, der letzten bedeutenden Mätresse und letztlich heimlichen Ehefrau Ludwig XIV., nicht an, was dazu führte, dass die Maintenon die einstmals guten Kontakte Liselottes zum König unterband. Als die Wittelsbacher-Linie Pfalz-Simmern 1685 mit dem Tode von Liselottes Bruder, des Kurfürsten Karl von der Pfalz, erlosch, erhob Liselottes Schwager Ludwig XIV. entgegen dem Erbschaftsvertrag Anspruch auf die Kurpfalz und begann den Pfälzischen Erbfolgekrieg u. a. mit der Zerstörung des Heidelberger Schlosses. Liselotte litt sehr unter den Verwüstungen, die in ihrer Heimat in ihrem Namen vorgenommen wurden. Ihr Mann, Philipp I. von Orléans, verteilte die Kriegsbeute großzügig an seine Günstlinge. Nach dem Tod von Ludwig XIV. wurde ihr Sohn Philipp II. von Orléans ihr Mann starb 1701 vor Ludwig für den noch unmündigen König Ludwig XV., Regent von Frankreich. Damit wurde Liselotte wieder die erste Dame des Staates. Dieses war sie schon einmal vom Tod der Maria Anna von Bayern am 20. April 1690, der Frau des großen Dauphin Ludwig, bis zur Hochzeit des Dauphin Ludwig (Herzog von Burgund) mit Maria Adelaide von Savoyen am 7. Dezember 1697 gewesen. Auf die Kinder Liselottes mit Philipp geht in männlicher Linie das Haus Orléans zurück, das mit Louis Philippe, dem so genannten Bürgerkönig", im Jahre 1830 auf den französischen Thron kam. Charakter: Das Ehepaar Liselotte und Philipp war charakterlich völlig unterschiedlich. Monsieur war schwach, ängstlich, übertrieben höflich und intrigant, Madame hingegen aufrichtig, stark, offen, gelegentlich scharfzüngig und fühlte sich nur im Freien wohl. Sie liebte das Lesen, im Gegensatz zu ihm, der frische Luft hasste und nichts an Büchern fand. Philip war verschwenderisch, brachte viel Geld vor allem für sein.
