Paperback. Condition: Good. How do we approach with godly wisdom the task of being a pastor-teacher in Christ's church? We must preach the word; but if we take seriously the New Testament injunctions about how we address this primary task, we will show our wisdom by humility, a teachable spirit, and diligence in pursuing all profitable means to present ourselves approved and unashamed workmen of God (2 Tim 2:15). Many questions face us. How do you introduce biblical exposition where it has been previously unknown? How do you plan an effective preaching programme? What distinguishes truly biblical ministry from merely ?bible-based' ministry?Do we properly understand and relate to the real people that make up our congregations, both personally and theologically? This book gives practical help in these areas for those seeking to develop authentic biblical expository ministry. Each contributor is totally committed to this priority, and each writes from the perspective of biblical reflection and real experience in local church ministry. Only the already-perfect pastor has nothing to learn from its pages.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. The human brain is quite remarkable. Its intricate workings have been subjected to intense study by some of the greatest intellects of our times and despite this, we still know relatively little about how it actually works. However, there is one fact on which all experts in the field are in agreement: the brain benefits from regular exercise in much the same way as muscles do. In fact, the brain not only benefits from this training - it thrives on it. What kind of exercise does the brain enjoy? Here the experts are again in agreement. Creative thinking, deductive reasoning and puzzle solving are all excellent areas for building up your mental muscle. The "Boost your Brainpower" series gives your brain the opportunity for serious regular exercise. Philip Carter and Ken Russell are UK Mensa Puzzle editors and are thus perfectly qualified to provide the equipment for a daily workout for your most important muscle. IQ puzzles are especially good training for the brain and are now increasingly being encountered in applications for employment in government, education, industry and commerce.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. This is a collection of previously unpublished essays on a variety of contemporary social and church-related topics by a founder of the discipline of social ethics, Walter G. Muelder. The editor, J. Philip Wogaman, one of Muelder's most outstanding students and an acclaimed social ethicist in his own right, compiled the collection and contributes a brief context for each essay. He concludes the volume with an insightful reflection on Muelder's broader significance and the outlook for social ethics 'beyond Muelder.'.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In September 2000, I was sitting on a bench facing the Mediterranean Sea in the French Riviera town of Nice. I had flown there during a three-day break in the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing trial in Camp Ziest, Netherlands, where I was expected to testify. As I sat on this bench eating lunch, I suddenly found myself overwhelmed by emotion. It was an awakening: I realized that my being there was the fulfillment of one of my many life dreams and goals that were launched thirty-one years earlier from another bench facing the Three Sisters Ponds in Baltimore's Druid Hill Park. Now, from a bench in the French Riviera, I began to chronicle the manifestation of those dreams and goals, accomplished through my thirty-six-year law enforcement career as a Baltimore City policeman and FBI agent. I'm hoping my story catches on with anyone who dares to dream and set challenging and aggressive life goals. I hope to inspire and encourage more interest in law enforcement careers by sharing my professional experiences and the educational, leadership, and career opportunities that were availed to me during my law enforcement career. My responsibilities as a Baltimore City policeman included saving lives, catching murder suspects, confronting wayward police, and dealing with crisis situations such as the 1971 student riots at the University of Maryland and the 1974 Baltimore City Police strike and riots. As an FBI agent, I was a part of the 1981 Brinks armored truck murder/robbery investigation in Nyack, NY; took part in New York FBI SWAT operations; and was involved in international extra-territorial terrorism investigations such as the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103, the attempted bombing of then-Secretary of State George Shultz's motorcade in La Paz, Bolivia, and the kidnapping and murders of Americans in Srinagar, India, and Karachi, Pakistan.…

Paperback. Condition: Fair. In this history of the Food and Drug Administration, Philip J. Hilts analyzes the century-long, continuing struggle to establish scientific standards as the basis for policymaking on food and drugs. The agency, which emerged out of the era of the robber barons' and Theodore Roosevelt's desire to ""civilize capitalism,"" was created to stop the trade in adulterated meats and quack drugs. In addition to highlighting the essential role the FDA plays in making sure that food and drugs are safe and effective, Protecting America's Health shows that FDA regulation, far from stifling innovation - as critics feared - has actually accelerated it.…

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This book explores the connection between what is deepest in us and the original goodness of creation seen in the Garden. Writing in the Celtic tradition, the author views grace not as opposed to nature, but as releasing God's creativity which was planted in us at birth. Love's wisdom and passion may lie buried under layers of confusion in our lives, but they are waiting to be recovered. The book imagines a pilgrimage through the different stages of life, from the innocence of the newborn, through the awakening of adolescence and the passions of adulthood, to the wisdom which comes from experience.…

Condition: Good. Bringing together an extraordinary richness of evidence from letters, diaries, and other intimate family records of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Philip Greven explores the strikingly distinctive ways in which Protestant children were reared in America. In tracing the hidden continuities of religious experience, of attitudes toward God, children, the self, sexuality, pleasure, virtue, and achievement, Greven identifies three distinct Protestant temperaments prevailing among Americans at the time: the Evangelical, the Moderate, and the General. The Protestant Temperament is a powerful reassessment of the role of child-rearing and religion in early American life.…
