Mais Plutarque était convaincu qu'Isis avait retrouvé tous les fragments…du corps d'Osiris, son phallus excepté - qui avait été dévoré par trois poissons du Nil - . Cependant ce détail que nous donnait l'historien grec ne concordait pas avec l'iconographie et les peintures des bandelettes où triomphe l'Osiris «germinant». La vérité, que les prêtres égyptiens avaient, volontairement ou non, dissimulé à Plutarque se trouve dans l'hymne d'Amenemha: «Isis fit les invocations de l'enterrement de son frère ; elle emporta les principes d'Osiris, en exprima l'essence et refit un enfant qu'elle allaita d'un seul bras » Cet ouvrage rare traduit et commente la stèle osiriaque de la Bibliothèque nationale et le papyrus 1425 du Musée égyptien de Berlin, qui provient des ruines de Thèbes où il fut découvert dans une statue creuse qui représentait Osiris. En mettant en relation les textes d'Hérodote, de Plutarque, et d'Apulée, Alfred Loisy s'efforce de comprendre le secret des mystères d'Isis, tels que l'antiquité tardive les vivait.
