Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First edition in English of Ignaz von Born's Monachologia, with a 32-page preface signed "By an English Protestant." Disbound, xxxii + 48 pp., three large folding plates of monks' and nuns' clothing, done in imitation of natural-history illustrations. Title page lightly spotted, otherwis…e very good. Von Born was a mineralogist and Hofrat im Muenz- und Bergkunde (that is, court adviser on coinage and mining) to the Hapsburgs. He was also a high-ranking Mason and initiated Mozart into Viennese Masonic circles. In this scathingly anti-clerical pamphlet, von Born, himself a scientist, used the emerging style of scientific prose for satiric purposes. Rare.
