Pamphlet. 1st Edition. 16 pp. 23 cm. Disbound from a volume of bound pamphlets. Small tear in last leaf. Some spots on title page, and final pages.16 pp. Pickering served in the Massachusetts militia and Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. He was the third United States Secretary of State, serving from 1795 until 1800, under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. The Massachusetts Republican Governor, James Sullivan, refused to even read the letter, which contained harsh criticism of the Embargo act, claimed Jefferson had presented no real arguments for its enactment and called for its nullification by the state legislators. Along with most other Federalists he opposed the War of 1812. Pickering was elected to the United States House of Representatives in the 1812 election, where he remained until 1817. And while his congressional career is best remembered for his leadership of the New England secession movement and the Hartford Convention, Pickering ruined his political career when he became involved with said Hartford Convention of 1815. Sullivan was Governor of Massachusetts; Pickering had served as a Colonel in the Continental Army, and in various other capacities under Presidents Washington and Adams, including Postmaster General and then Secty .of State under the former, and Secty.of Sate for three years under Adams. It seems that Sullivan had accused Pickering of conspiring with Aaron Burr against the national government.…

Removed. First edition. 8 pp. 8vo. An early extradition case which grew into a firestorm of protest. Thomas Nash, who had participated in a bloody mutiny on a British ship, had escaped the British manhunt for the mutineers, only to be spotted in the United States where he was detained. The British wanted him extradited under the terms of the Jay Treaty. Nash then claimed he was an American citizen by the name of Jonathan Robbins, when in fact he was Irish. Though there were no charges brought against him, he had a habeas corpus hearing and was extradited by Judge Thomas Bee with the tacit approval of President John Adams. The British executed him and the Jeffersonians, fueled by anti-British sentiments, kept his case alive, where it was then taken up in Congress.
