Il a servi à la Légion Étrangère de 1928 à 1954…. Il a participé à la conquête du Maroc, à la seconde Guerre mondiale et enfin à la campagne d'Indochine de 1946 à 1950. Fait prisonnier par le Vietminh, le 7 octobre 1950, il fut libéré le 5 septembre 1954. Dans son précédent ouvrage : "RC 4, la tragédie de Cao Bang", le colonel Charton y évoquait cette terrible bataille perdue et sa captivité chez les Viets. Dans ce livre intitulé : "Il y a la Légion" (titre inspiré d'une citation du colonel de Corta qui disait : Il y a la Légion et puis il n'y a rien, ou du moins il y a le reste, et le reste c'est de la merde), il nous promène de souvenirs en anecdotes vécues au cours de ses vingt-six années de Légion Étrangère.
