Intéressants et importants courriers l'un adressé à Aurélien Scholl, l'autre vraisemblablement à Arthur Ranc (contresigné par A Perreau). Afin de bien compren…dre toute la portée de ces documents, il faut connaître le contexte précis. Des élections législatives sont prévues en octobre 1893. Dans la circonscription de Neuilly-Boulogne, la 4e de la Seine, se présentent plusieurs candidats dont Louis Lefoullon (1844-1895), radical, qui sera élu de peu face à Maurice Barrès (1862-1923), boulangiste. Au premier tour, il y eut aussi Francis de Pressensé (1853-1914), protestant, de gauche, un des fondateurs de la Ligue des Droits de l'Homme. Lors d'une réunion électorale, le 16 août 1893, il y eut une violente altercation entre Barrès et Pressensé qui donna lieu à un duel. Qui était l'offensé ? Des ouvrages sur le sujet disent que c'était Pressensé, une des lettres nous dit que c'était Barrès. En réalité, c'est Barrès qui s'est senti offensé mais l'arbitre décida que Pressensé était l'offensé. Pour ce duel, les témoins de Pressensé furent Alheim et A. Perreau, ce dernier remplaçant M. Franck. Notons qu'Alheim et Perreau étaient journalistes au Temps. Pour Barrès, Gaston Calmette (1858-1914) & Aurélien Scholl, grand spécialiste des duels, furent les témoins. Arthur Ranc (1831-1908) était l'arbitre. Ces deux courriers, probablement écrits fin août 1893, nous apprennent de nombreux détails sur le procès-verbal qui fut fait le 18 août 1893 entre les deux parties, parlant d'un arbitrage après les élections et d'une trêve consentie par les deux parties. Alheim se plaint ici : « En ce qui concerne M. de Pressensé, je vous ferai remarque que la trêve consentie par nous n'a pas été respectée à son égard ». En effet, suite à cette altercation, il semble que les domestiques de Barrès aient été agressés. Barrès et ses partisans n'hésitèrent pas à parler d'« attentat criminel » et il y eut des violences contre les partisans de Pressensé jusqu'au siège de son comité, l'accusant d'assassinat. Finalement, le duel eut lieu le 4 septembre 1893 . On échangea deux balles. Pressensé, sans qu'on sache exactement pourquoi, tira de la main gauche et on parle de « pseudotir » pour mieux signifier à Barrès son mépris. Le Gil Blas mentionne qu'il « a tiré en l'air ». Superbes courriers autour de la préparation de ce duel, documents rares. [109].
