After a brilliant career at the University in the city, he began in 1828 to contribute to the journal de Debats, in which state he remained for nearly half a century. After the July revolution and the reign of Louis-Philippe as king of Frances liberal July monarchy, he was appointed Professor of history at the Sorbonne and master of requests in the Conseil dEtat. Soon after, he changed the Department of history for one of poetry, continuing to contribute political articles to the journal de Debats, and sits as a Deputy in the Chamber from 1835 to 1848. In 1833 he was charged with a mission to study German methods of teaching, and has published a report advocating the necessity of new methods and technical instructions. In 1844 he was elected a member of the French Academy. During the revolution of February 1848 Girardin was for a moment a Minister, but after the establishment of the second French Republic, he was not re-elected Deputy of the National Assembly. After the Franco-Prussian war, he was returned to the Assembly of Bordeaux in his old Department - Haute-Vienne. It Orleanists tendencies and their objections to the Third Republic were strong, and although he at first supported Adolphe Thiers, he afterwards became the leader of the opposition to the President. He died, however, in 1873 at Morsang-sur-Seine before they were actually removed from power.

He published in 1824 an Apologie pour l'école romantique (In Defense of the Romantic school) and took an active part in Parisian journalism. His appointment, in 1828, to the department of manuscripts in the Bibliothèque royale left him leisure to pursue his studies in medieval French literature. His numerous editions of early French poems continued the work begun by Dominique Meon in arousing general interest in the chanson de geste.[2]Admitted to the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres in 1837, Paris was shortly afterwards appointed on the commission entrusted with the continuation of the Histoire littéraire de la France. In 1853, a chair of medieval literature was founded at the Collège de France, and Paris became the first occupant. He retired in 1872 with the title of honorary professor and was promoted to officer of the Legion of Honour in the next year.

Scarce.Louis Ferdinand Alfred Maury (March 23, 1817 - February 11, 1892), was a French scholar and physician, important because his ideas about the interpretation of dreams and the effect of external stimuli on dreams pre-dated those of Sigmund Freud. He is mentioned by Freud in The Interpretation of Dreams, and by Sebastian Faulks in Human Traces. He coined the term hypnagogic hallucination and reported a dream that famously inspired Salvador Dalí's painting Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee Around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening. Alfred Maury was contemporary with Hervey de Saint Denys and the two dream researchers were in disagreement with each other (Blanken & Meijer, 1988).
