Hardcover. Black paper-covered boards with title printed in white on cover and spine, with matching black-and-white printed dust jacket and black page-marker ribbon. Newspaper photographs collected, edited and grouped by Peter Piller. Edited and designed by Christoph Keller. Unpaginated (384 pp.), with 583 four-color and 1000 black-and-white illustrations. 11-1/4 x 11-1/4 inches. New in publisher's shrink-wrap. Published on the occasion of 2007-2008 exhibitions at the Salzburg Kunstverein, the Hamburg Kunsthalle and at Kunsthaus Glarus (Switzerland). When he was a picture editor for an advertising agency, the German artist Peter Piller began to build an archive of thousands of newspaper photographs. As he poured over them and began to categorize them in quirky ways, he developed a new visual language. Comprised of over 1500 images culled from newspapers, Piller's Zeitung is a veritable encyclopedia of photographs grouped according to an unexpected common detail, a strange suggested back story or some other bizarre common thread. An archive representing a more public version of Gerhard Richter's personalized Atlas, Piller's project, through these otherwise unremarkable [uncaptioned] images, nonetheless has as much to say about the artist as it does the strange patterns and obsessions of contemporary culture. From the publisher: "From 1994 to 2005, German artist Peter Piller worked a day job at a leading Hamburg ad agency where he was responsible for analyzing and archiving more than 150 regional newspapers. The grinding repetition of this task inspired him to create the Peter Piller Archive, which consists of countless images culled from these newspapers and gathered into 80-some highly subjective categories such as 'Touching Cars,' 'Sad, Hopeless, Despair, Tristesse,' 'Girls Firing Arms,' 'Stand-in, Protests' or 'Man and Fire.' Zeitung, part of a series of artists' projects edited by Christoph Keller, is the most complete compilation to date of Piller's fascinating collection, which, at turns mundane and grotesque, constitutes an improbable typology of press photography from the last decade.".

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine condition. First edition. Laid in original aerial color photograph signed by Peter Piller, numbered N 27, dated 2004. (10 x 10") "Von Erde schöner" was published in an edition of 800 copies with numbers 1-30 containing a signed original photograph. Large Quarto Square (11 1/4 x 11 1/4"). Original tan cloth with black lettering on cover and spine, in original photo-illustrated dustjacket in color, black lettering on spine; housed in original gray cardboard box with black lettering on white label of cover. The publication was sponsored by the Albert-Renger-Patzsch-Preis of the Dietrich-Oppenberg-Stiftung, Essen. "Approximately 20,00 aerial photographs of single residences were part of a company estate I took over in 2002. Between 1979 and 1983 countless settlements were flown over at low altitude to take aerial photographs of single residences to sell to potential buyers. Their versos contained insightful notes, e.g.: "No interest in photographs," "Von Erde schöner", "Wife wants, but house too expensive," "I can get half a motorbike for that," "Doing it myself," or simply "Deceased." Various sightings of the archive lead to areas to collect and inventory categories, like "sleeping houses," floral bodies," and "human in front of house." A fourth, fifth and sixth view of 18 moving crates full of lightly yellowed photographs and negatives finally revealed, what this book now reveals." (Peter Piller). Text in German. Cardboard box with light wear along edges, else in Fine condition.
