Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A pocket-sized presentation of the three most venerated Buddhist sutras of Zen Buddhism- the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Platform Sutra, featuring easy-to-understand translations and helpful footnotes-all from a legendary practitioner and translator of Buddhist teachingsA pocket-sized presentation of the three most venerated Buddhist sutras of Zen Buddhism- the Heart Sutra, Diamond Sutra, and Platform Sutra, featuring easy-to-understand translations and helpful footnotes-all from a legendary practitioner and translator of Buddhist teachingsThree classic Buddhist sutras-often linked to form a trio of texts that have been revered and studied for centuries-are now available together in this single volume. Red Pine, whose acclaimed translations these particular Buddhist texts are considered canon, provides a sensitive and assured treatment of the classic triumvirate in a gift-sized volume, perfect for sharing with anyone seeking guidance and peace. The Heart Sutra offers the Prajnaparamita teaching of emptiness. The Diamond Sutra outlines the bodhisattva path followed by the Buddha. The Platform Sutra is an autobiography of Hui-neng, the controversial 6th Patriarch of Zen, whose teachings have served as an introduction to Zen for 1,300 yearsIn addition to new translations of all three texts, Red Pine has included an introduction that ties all three together and just enough footnotes to explain what needs explaining but not enough to get in the way. Saddle-stapled wraps. Condition: New. New! // 'Of all the Buddhists in China, Japan, and Korea, the vast majority follow teachings centered on rebirth in the Pure Land, or Western Paradise, of Amitabha Buddha. All Buddhist sutras are about the mind, the mind and the Buddha, and about reducing, if not eliminating, the apparent distance between the two.' ~ Publisher.
Saddle-stapled wraps. Condition: New. New! // 'In the 'Empty Bowl Sutra,' which appears here in English for the first time, the Buddha's disciples' question Manjusri, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, on his way to town to beg for food, and he responds with the teaching of emptiness--that anything we might think of as real is illusory and its 'thingness' based on nothing more than our own projections. In the 'Diamond Sutra,' the translation of which has benefitted from recently discovered Sanskrit copies, the Buddha returns from his own begging round and tells his disciples what results when they combine this teaching with the vow to liberate others.' ~ Publisher.
Saddle-stapled wraps. Condition: New. New! Translated by Red Pine. //'For over a thousand years the Song of Enlightenment has been one of the most popular texts in all of Eastern Asia.' ~ Publisher.
Saddle-stapled wraps. Condition: New. New! 'The two sutras translated in this chapbook were among the first to arrive in China in the first and second centuries and among the first to be translated. Compiled from other texts as Buddhist primers for an audience that was new to the Dharma, their emphasis is on the Buddha's teachings of suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and no self. Couched in the simplest of language, they have remained part of the daily liturgy in Buddhist temples throughout East Asia ever since. In addition to a preface, and footnotes where necessary, they are presented here in a bilingual edition.' ~Publisher.

Saddle-stapled wraps. Condition: New. New! 'This is a book of translation about translating. Red Pine has revisited the poems first translated by Ezra Pound in his Cathay, renewed them through his own experience of language and culture, and attached an important essay about the art of translating. In Red Pine's words: 'Soon after I printed the first version of this chapbook, I gave a copy to William Merwin. He told me he visited Pound when he was incarcerated at St. Elizabeths. Like Pound, Merwin made up his mind when he was quite young that he was going to be a poet, and he asked Pound for advice. Pound told him, 'If you want to be a poet, a good poet, learn to translate.' Happily, Merwin took his advice. Translators work in the middle ground, between languages, and that ground can be as vas--or as narrow--as the translator's vision. Of course, trying to convince others of the validity of that vision isn't easy. But it's no reason not to try. In the fall of 2004, I was invited to take part in a conference on Chinese poetry at Simmons College in Boston. The organizer, Afaa Weaver, asked me to say something about how I went about my work. I had never given it any thought. I just did it. But I agreed it was time to say something, and I wrote the short piece that I've appended to the end of this chapbook. I don't know how other people do it, but when I translate, I see someone on the dancefloor I can't resist joining, but I'm deaf. I don't hear the music. I only see the dancer, dancing.'' ~ Publisher.
