LA PLACETE (Jean). Divers traités sur les matières de conscience. Amsterdam, G. Gallet, 1699. In-12, [7] f., 365 p., basane brune, dos à nerfs orné (rel. pastiche XVIIIe). Rare exemplaire de cette réunion de traités philosophiques, religieux et moraux sur le mensonge et les équivoques, sur le prêt à intérêt, sur la légitime défense, sur le scandale et sur les jeux de hasard. Jean La Placette (1639-1718) est un pasteur et prédicateur protestant français qui fut pasteur à Orthez et Nay avant de quitter la France en 1685 pour échapper aux persécutions contre les protestants. Il a ensuite été pasteur à Königsberg et Copenhague, où il a dirigé l'Église réformée française jusqu'à sa mort. La Placette a écrit et publié plusieurs traités religieux et de morale remarqués, notamment un traité sur les jeux de hasard dans lequel il discute leur interdiction légale en raison des abus qu'ils provoquaient. Bien que le traité sur la légitime défense soit lui aussi très intéressant pour les questions essentielles que La Placette soulève, celui sur les jeux tient une place à part car il aborde l'ambiguïté fondamentale liée au hasard. Si Dieu décide de tout, alors il est maître des sorts qui ne sont hasardeux qu'en apparence. Si on gagne, ne serait-ce pas parce que la chance en avait décidé ainsi ? Il recentre la question de l'interdit sur les règles établies par les joueurs et considère que c'est le gain qui vient troubler une activité d'appréhension divine qui n'est pas repréhensible en soi. Cette exploration du jeu offre un regard inédit et audacieux. Titre frontispice de Peter van den Berge. Bon état général, coiffe élimée, ex-libris manuscrit sur la garde, les autres défauts sont mineurs.
