La storia dell'arte tessile italiana è ripercorsa dai suoi prodromi sino al Settecento, con ampia documentazione e originali analisi sia per quanto attiene all'aspetto tecnico che per la parte propriamente estetica. Prefazione di Paolo D'Ancona, che, fra l'altro, scrive: Lavoro meditato, pazientemente costruito sulla base di documenti d'archivio e di documenti d'arte, gli uni e gli altri amorosamente interrogati con lo scrupolo di chi nello studio mira soprattutto alla compiutezza ed al vero.
