Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. This is the translation into English by Simon Armitage from the Middle English of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", one of the greatest of Arthurian verse stories. Published in 2007 by W. W. Norton in New York, this is the First American Edition , hardcover format. The book is furnished with illuminating notes about Middle English meter by James Simpson. The original Middle English is given, with the modern translation on the facing pages. ******************************************** From the dust-jacket wrote-up : "Preserved by a single surviving manuscript dating from around 1400 AD, composed by an anonymous master, 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" was rediscovered only two hundred years ago, and published for the first time in 1839. One of the earliest great stories of English literature after 'Beowulf', the poem narrates the strange tale of a green knight on a green horse, who rudely interrupt the Round Table festivities one Yuletide, casting a pall of unease over the company and challenging one of their number to a wager. The virtuous Gawain accepts and decapitates the intruder with his own axe. Gushing blood, the knight reclaims his head, orders Gawain to seek him out a year hence, and departs. Next Yuletide Gawain dutifully sets forth. His quest for the Green Knight involves a winter journey, a seduction scene in a dreamlike castle, a dire challenge answered - and a drama of enigmatic reward disguised as psychic undoing." ******************************************* Said poet John Ashbery of Armitage's effort : "Simon Armitage's luscious version continues the tradition of great poet-translators ."/ Said Sean O'Brien of the 'Sunday Times' : "Armitage makes it utterly, even completely readable, and as fresh as it must have been in 1400." / Said Mark Ford of the 'Financial Times' : "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is one of the most haunting contributions of the 15th century to the legends of King Arthur and the Round Table. -- Armitage's version inventively recreates the original gnarled, hypnotic music, its vivid tableaux and landscapes, its weird, unsettling drama." ********************************************** TITLE : Sir Gawain and the Green Knight / AUTHOR : Anonymous / TRANSLATOR : Simon Armitage / INTRODUCTION : Simon Armitage / NOTES : James Simpson / IMPRINT : W. W.
