First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. London: Joseph, Myers & Comp., 1861. First edition [1861] of this exceptionally scarce nineteenth century primer in English, German and French, with six hand colored illustrations on each leaf, printed on one side only. Printed hardcover with red cloth spine. This copy has newer endpapers (probably early 20th century) and may not be complete - there is no title page or other preliminaries - with fourteen leaves, each illustrated. The pages are titled: The Dining Room; The Bedroom; The Nursery; The Kitchen; The Garden; Trades (depicts tradesmen at work); Scientific Instruments (includes a telescope, globe, compasses, microscope, eyeglasses and a diving bell); Animals; Flowers; Vegetables; Fruit; Clothes; The Farm-Yard; and Games. The illustrations are quite skillfully colored. The covers are well worn, with quite a few edge chips and soiling. The pages are mainly very good with scattered foxing, each a tiny small closed hole in the far inner margin at least a half inch away from the printed area - perhaps the holes were used to string something through to hold the book together at one point - but the covers have no such holes. A few pages have some edgewear but no significant chips or tears - only one page has a large tear which has been very carefully repaired from the reverse side with thin paper tape. This same page has a few old pencil scribbles on the unprinted side. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fair. 8vo (23 cm x 17.5 cm).
