Hardcover. First edition. First printing [stated]. xxviii, 287 p. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. Index. Foreword by John Y. Simon. One of the Civil War America series. Union general John Pope was among the most controversial and misunderstood figures to hold major command during the Civil War. Before being called east in June 1862…to lead the Army of Virginia against General Robert E. Lee, he compiled an enviable record in Missouri and as commander of the Army of the Mississippi. After his ignominious defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run, he was sent to the frontier. Over the next twenty-four years Pope held important department commands on the western plains and was recognized as one of the army's leading authorities on Indian affairs, but he never again commanded troops in battle. In 1886, Pope was engaged by the National Tribune, a weekly newspaper published in Washington, D.C., to write a series of articles on his wartime experiences. Over the next five years, in twenty-nine installments, he wrote about the war as he had lived it. Collected here for the first time, Pope's "war reminiscences" join a select roster of memoirs written by Civil War army commanders. Good in very good dust jacket. Some minor page discoloration and some damp rippling on pages 67-70.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Evanston, IL: Clark Publishing Company, 1954. Cover by Virgil Finlay. The October, 1954 issue of Fate Magazine (issue no. 55) in Raymond A. Palmer's now-legendary paranormal-reporting non-fiction enterprise, which began with, in its first issue, Kenneth Arnold's cover account of flyi…ng crescents which "skipped like saucers across a pond", an event which, for whatever reason, kicked off the modern era of UFO events. After that, Fate introduced countless events which remain, to this day, fodder for paranormal documentaries and investigation. 12mo, illustrated perfect-bound wraps, 130 pp. Near Fine, with a faint small-scale crease at top right of the front cover (see scan), which also faintly creases the first few page corners; micro-wear at a couple other points (see scan). High Grade, particularly for a periodical which often shows substantial wear from use. See scans. This issue features an entire section on Animal ESP, as well as articles on Precognition; Freakish Coincidence; Spontaneous Human Combustion; Ghosts; Psychic Healing; Race of Dwarves; Poltergeist, and much else, including the standard Departments, always engrossing in themselves. The great Virgil Finlay executed the titillating cover, which is also reproduced within, in black and white, in the subject article. Other interior art is largely uncredited or photographic. A piece of paranormal history, and an example of a unique branch of Americana, in very highly collectible condition. l48n. Finlay, Virgil (cover) (illustrator).
