Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. The Mountain Lake Sanctuary in Florida is famous for its Singing Tower, from which carillon chimes peal forth in musical cadence across the beautiful grounds surrounding the tower. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the sanctuary grounds, and Milton B. Medary designed the tower. This souvenir bookle…t, a reprint, was copyrighted in 1940 and presents an array of handsome sepia toned photographs of the tower, its interior and the grounds surrounding. as well as three beautiful color pictures (including cover). There is an appreciative introductory text by Edward W. Bok that leads into the main text, which amply describes the wonders of the Sanctuary. On the first page is a dedicatory statement: "This singing tower with its adjacent sanctuary was dedicated and presented for visitation to the American People by Calvin Coolidge, President of the United States, February the First MCMXXIX ." The pictures, throughout are lovely, including a few drawings, and a picture of a a relief frieze map of Florida. The flamingos that hang out at the lagoon of the sanctuary proudly posed for a photograph also. The book notes that the Bellmaster of the Sanctuary - a Master Carillonneur - was Anton Brees. He was Laureate of the Royal Flemish Conservatory, Belgium. Mr. Brees is shown playing the chimes. There is also a handsome photograph of Mr. Bok at the front of the book; Bok was a Pulitzer Prize winning author who, incidentally, coined the term 'Living Room'. Under his portrait is a statement by Bok : "Make you the world a bit better or more beautiful because you have lived in it -" TITLE : The Mountain Lake Sanctuary, Florida FOREWORD : Edward A. The group was set up in protest at the organisation of an exhibition the previous year by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacture and Commerce. Hogarth designed this frontispiece and tailpiece for the catalogue. The illustrations were originally engraved by Charles Grignion, but this print is from copper plates engraved (very close indeed to the originals) later, probably by Thomas Cook c1800. Both images are engraved on a single plate, unlike the originals. We believe that the original Grignion plates no longer exist, and this engraving was used as a substitute in early 19th century editions. This impression is from the 1835-1837 edition published in parts by Baldwin Cradock & Joy. The Hogarth designs are listed as 236 and 237 in Paulson's catalogue Hogarth's Graphic Works, 1989, where a full description and other details can be found.

The Prologue and six of the stories had previously appeared in the National Observer, the journal then edited by William Ernest Henley. Widely praised upon its first appearance, Algernon Charles Swinburne, writing in the Daily Chronicle, called it 'one of the few books which are well nigh too praiseworthy for praise'. The book has come to be regarded as a classic in its genre. Typical of his culture and his era, Grahame casts his reminiscences in imagery and metaphor rooted in the culture of Ancient Greece; to the children whose impressions are recorded in the book, the adults in their lives are 'Olympians', while the chapter titled 'The Argonauts' refers to Perseus, Apollo, Psyche, and similar figures of Greek Mythology. Grahame's reminiscences, in 'The Golden Age' and in the later 'Dream Days' (1898), were notable for their conception of a world where children are locked in perpetual warfare with the adult 'Olympians' who have wholly forgotten how it feels to be young. A theme later explored by J.M. Barrie and other authors. Very scarce with jacket. Jacket possibly by Maxfield Parrish (illustrator).
