From the introduction: "After talking to many book dealers over the past few years I realized that there was something lacking in the way of reference material. There were many price guides out, but none included early reprints and most only had a few entries by any one illustrator. After doing much research, I found that it is impossible to have enough detailed information if your category for your price guide is too broad. Usually the larger area a guide includes, the less detailed information it has. This is the reason that I decided to include only 26 of the top illustrators of illustrated books so that almost every book that these artists illustrated could be included. The toughest task was to decide who to include and who to leave out. I tried to pick the illustrators that were widely collected and known. I know that there are many important illustrators that should be in here but we had to draw the line somewhere." Illustrators include Cicely Mary Barker, Howard Chandler Christy, Palmer Cox, Walter Crane, W. W. Denslow, Edmund Dulac, Harrison Fisher, H. J. Ford, Charles Dana Gibson, Kate Greenaway, Johnny Gruelle, Bessie Pease Gutmann, Maud Humphrey, John R. Neill, Peter Newell, Kay Nielsen, Rose O'Neill, Maxfield Parrish, Will Pogany, Beatrix Potter, Howard Pyle, Arthur Rackham, John Rae, Jesse Wilcox Smith, Hugh Thomson, and N. C Wyeth.
