Interior pages quite yellowed and aged, but interior is clean and tight. DJ has chips and tears - protected from further damage in clean Brodart jacket. Illustrated endpapers, hinges good. Frontispiece + 3 b/w full page illustrations. Cover shows boy on horse with a dog which appears to be part Airedale or Irish Terrier. Description of dog in text is mixed breeding, hair stiff and crinkly and brindle colored. Regardless, Stocky is a brave intelligent dog who is young Kent's constant companion. 274 pages. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall 1st Printing.

Offered here are nine original pen and ink drawings, by Charles L. Pott (1865-1910), British 19th Century who appeared in Punch Magazine, including the title-page with red watercolor thick circle and emanating rays surrounding the hot air ballon, and red lettering below. The drawings appear on large format artboard (about 15 x 10 inches for 8 out of 10, the other two 10 x 9 inches). Six out of ten with red/orange watercolor highlights and fill-ins. We were unable to determine if the book was ever published, but the drawings are certainly well-executed, and the fact that the publisher is given lends toward that conclusion; interestingly, the space where a title would be is blank, and instead, we find written in pencil: "SPACE for Title in Red." Each drawing has either full name signature, "Charles L. Pott," or monogram "CLP." Very good condition with occasional very light marking.
