Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Beatrix Potter (illustrator). First Edition - Second Impression. Incredibly Rare Hand signed dedication on the first blank end-page reads: 'For Mr P. Shaffer. - With Kind Regards from Leslie Linder - July 11th 1966' - Peter Shaffer was a well known English playwright and screenwriter: - Sir Peter Levin Shaffer CBE (15 May 1926 - 6 June 2016) was an English playwright, screenwriter, and novelist. He is best known for the plays Equus and Amadeus, the latter of which was adapted for the screen by Milo? Forman, with a screenplay by Shaffer, for which he won an Academy Award. - Equus (1973) won Shaffer the 1975 Tony Award for Best Play as well as the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award. - Equus: A journey into the mind of a seventeen-year-old stableboy who had plunged a spike into the eyes of six horses, Equus ran for more than 1,000 performances on Broadway. It was revived by Massachusetts' Berkshire Theatre Festival in the summers of 2005 and 2007, by director Thea Sharrock at London's Gielgud Theatre in February 2007, and on Broadway (in the Sharrock staging) in September 2008. - The latter production, which ran in New York City until February 2009, required the stableboy to appear naked; its star, Daniel Radcliffe, was still associated with the Harry Potter film series intended for general audiences, and this led to mild controversy. - BEHIND THE SCENES: Beginning at age 14, Beatrix Potter kept a coded journal. It would not be decoded until Leslie Linder, a superfan of the author who later donated an extensive collection of materials by and about the writer to the V&A Museum, cracked the code after 13 long years. In 1966, the journal was published for the first time by Frederick Warne - From the inside front prelim: This Journal, which is a remarkable document, was written (by Beatrix Potter) only for her own eyes. It gives a first-hand account of Victorian life in the late 19th century, and throws light on Beatrix Potter between the ages of 15 and 30, during which period comparatively little has hitherto been known. - It shows how her writing matured as she passed from girlhood to woman-hood, and brings out her powers of observation, her shrewd judgement of human character, her keen sense of humour and her appreciate of nature and art. The volume is illustrated with facsimile pages from the Journal, examples of her drawings and water colours, and photographs of the Potter family and some of the places mentioned in the Journal. There are 28 illustrations in colour and 39 in monochrome, and the volume includes Family Trees and a comprehensive index. - Condition & Description of the book: The original dustjacket houses this book. It retains the price to inner front prelim; 63/- NET, which was very expensive in 1966. The condition was not great; having creasing, general soiling and several chips. I have repaired the dustjacket using parts of another dustjacket and it looks beautiful. I have also housed this in a removable archival sleeve. The green faux leather boards with gold gilt lettering the spine and decoration to the front board are in a beautiful condition. The dustjacket has most certainly served this book well and kept the boards immaculate. Page block is tight. End-pages are of a lightly mottled blue/grey colour and apart from the Leslie Linder dedication to the front, the end pages are in a beautifully clean condition. This is a heavy book with 448 pages and it is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs, it really is a beautiful work. Few areas of spotting and foxing. - E N D -. Inscribed by Author(s).

Twelvemo (5 3/16 x 4 1/16 inches; 131 x 103 mm.). [84] pp. Color frontispiece and forty-one full-page black and white text illustrations. Original olive green boards pictorially stamped and lettered in black on front cover. Spine rounded (not flat). Spine a bit darkened, with extremities very lightly rubbed. A few minor scratches to front cover. Occasional very minor finger soiling. A near fine copy of this extremely rare edition. Housed in a quarter speckled calf clamshell case. An excellent association copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper to Victoria, the youngest daughter of Blanche Wrigley (née Potter), Beatrix Potter's cousin: "To/'Victoria'/from/Grandmama/Feb. 13th, 1902." "Grandmama" was probably Mary Anderson, the wife of Beatrix Potter's uncle, Edmund Crompton Potter. "The first issue comprised 250 copies; they are distinguished by a flat-backed binding of gray-green boards, printed with a black-line drawing. The books were ready on 16 December and Miss Potter began giving them away to selected friends and relatives and selling them to others at one shilling two pence each. By this time, however, Beatrix Potter's career had already been given its first impetus, for the publisher Frederick Warne & Co. had agreed to accept the book for publication in a regular trade edition. But in February 1902, before the trade edition was ready, Miss Potter ordered another 200 copies to be printed of her private edition, this second issue had a rather better binding, with a rounded back and darker printed boards. In October 1902 the Warne commercial edition was published" (Morgan Library, Early Children's Books, 220, describing the 1901 first issue). Linder, p. 420. Quinby 1A. HBS 69526. $35,000. Signed.

Add to basketIllustrated by Beatrix Potter (illustrator). With a signed dedication from Beatrix Potter to Barbara Ruxton, dated August 1911. Holidaying in the Lake District in 1911 when she was 12 years old, Barbara Ruxton was invited to meet Beatrix Potter, and became one of her correspondents; the letters to her from Potter were among the few to survive after she was married to William Heelis in 1913. She was also staying with Potter in 1913 at Castle Cottage, prior to the wedding, when Potter was working to finish the illustrations for Pigling Bland, and saved her the task of redrawing one of her illustrations with the useful suggestion of placing the cockerel on a saucer and thus filling the space she had accidentally left beneath him. This is a later edition of Jemima Puddle-Duck, published around 1911, a few years after the first edition in 1908, and is the tale of one of the real ducks who lived at Hill Top Farm with the scenery being a beautiful depiction of the farm and surrounding landscape, colour frontispiece and 26 colour illustrations, pp 86 (Linder, 1979). Colour frontispiece of Peter Rabbit, colour title page vignette. Twelve colour plates, one for each month, with a separate page for the calendar surrounded by line drawings of bunnies. This was the only almanac to be produced by Potter. It took her a long time to get it how she wanted and as a result only this one was published. However, it is delightful. Due to the throw away nature of almanacs and diaries few copies of this book have survived. Beatrix Potter often signed her books for local residents and farmers of the Lake District, after she relocated there in 1913.

The recipient, Mary Kynaston, was Headmistress at Queen's College in London, an independent school for girls aged 11â"18 which was the first institution in the world to award academic qualifications to women and the first girls' school to be granted a Royal Charter for the furtherance of women's education. Add to basketFirst edition. Original cloth backed glazed pictorial boards. A good copy, with some wear to the corners and spine a sizeable chip torn from the corner of the front end paper. Internally fresh and clean. Tipped in chromolithograph frontispiece and numerous black and white illustrations throughout by various artists including Beatrix Potter, Louis Wain, and W. Foster. The most significant contribution is nine line drawings by Beatrix Potter (signed HBP) to accompany a verse entitled "A frog he would a fishing go". There is also a full page black and white image after a pen and gouache drawing by Potter, to accompany "The Story of Violante and the Silver Sixpence". These illustrations, which had their genesis in a picture letter to Eric Moore of September 1893, were offered (and after some horse trading, sold) to Nister in 1894. Potter had hoped Nister would publish them as the contents of a small booklet, but Robert Mack of Nister had replied that, "people do not want frogs now. The only way we could use it would be as a double page in our 'Annual'.". The illustrations duly appeared occupying three pages accompanying the verse "A Frog he would a fishing go", by another author. In due course Potter bought back the copyright (and blocks) for the illustrations and developed them to be published in 1906 as The Tale of Jeremy Fisher. The separate full page image depicts two young kittens looking in a shop window being watched by the shop keeper, knitting in the doorway, over which is the sign, "Squintina Tabby / Licensed to sell / Tea". The image carries the caption "What shall we Buy?". Leslie Linder's The History of the Writings of Beatrix Potter shows a rough sketch of the old tabby (facing p.179), noting that it was "for a picture sold to Ernest Nister". An original version of this image was sold as part of the property of Bertram Potter at Sotheby's July 2008. Comical Customers is now extremely scarce. Cotson (Potter) 562;

First Edition. The Only Peter Rabbit Almanac First London Edition - Inscribed by Beatrix Potter POTTER, Beatrix. Peter Rabbit's Almanac for 1929. New York: Frederick Warne & Co., Ltd., 1928. First London edition. Inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Beatrice Heap / from Beatrix Potter / Aug 23. 29." Twelvemo (4 13/16 x 3 5/8 inches; 123 x 92 mm.). [44] pp. Color frontispiece, color vignette on title-page, and twelve color plates. Publisher's original tan boards, lettered in brown on covers and spine, each cover with a color pictorial label (depicting Peter Rabbit coming and going) within a blind egg-shaped panel with straight base. Color pictorial endpapers. Some light scattered foxing, small light stain to the spine edge of the covers. A near fine copy, housed in a brown cloth clamshell case. The recipient, Beatrice Heap, was likely a member of Potter's local circle in the Lake District, to whom she frequently presented copies of her works in this informal manner during her later years. Such inscriptions - simply phrased, warmly personal, and dated - are characteristic of Potter's private gift copies rather than commercial or presentation inscriptions. Conceived by Warne as the first in a projected series, Peter Rabbit's Almanac proved to be an isolated experiment. Potter was dissatisfied with the format and felt it interfered with her other commitments; as a result, no further almanacs were produced, making this the sole example of its kind within her body of work. The almanac itself is uncommon, particularly in well-preserved condition. Copies inscribed by Potter - especially those dating from her later Lake District years - are notably scarce. Signed.
