First Edition
Half-Leather. Condition: Fair/Good. this volume is complete in itself but there is a 2nd volume of "Rural recreations" containing "The modern farmer's calendar" (instructor) and "the elements of botany", (ii) ii (advert leaf) 163 427 [1]pp, engraved frontispiece, lacks other engraved plates, contemporary half calf (very worn and heavily rubbed, joints cracked, corners bumped, spine leather with surface cracks and minor loss to ends), a few pages with underlining and marginal notes (mainly in pencil), advert leaf and last 15 pages foxed, a few pages lightly browned, a few light marginal stains and marks, gift inscription (1829) and signature (1833) on front blank, 8vo (229x137mm). The 1806 edition is a reissue of the 1802 first edition with the only differences being a new title page and page 115 in part 1 being correctly numbered (it is numbered 119 in the first edition). However, this copy has the new title page but does not have page 115 correctly numbered. Therefore there appears to be three issues of this work, the 1802 first printed by E Hodson, the 1806 reissue printed by W Wison (per title although the last page still names E Hodson) and this version which has the new title with the 1802 printing.

Seller: Hünersdorff Rare Books ABA ILAB, London, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 8vo. 380pp. With lithograph title-page and 31 engraved illustrations, most full-page, one signed, in text. Publisher's cloth, gilt title; very slightly worn. A monthly garden calendar with bold illustrations of individual blooms and fruit, and a flower-bed plan. Weekly instructions are followed by historical monographs, often on a florist's flower or an exotic (auricula, dahlia, ranunculus, passion flower, the cucumber)and notes and comment on matters of contemporary horticultural interest. An article on the 'formation of the flower bed' distils discussions throughout the book advocating the 'mingled flower garden', aesthetic preference for geometric parterres on grass rather than gravel and bearing in mind the vast amount of plants being introduced, a caution to confine 'rarity and variety . to the botanical flower-garden'. Contributors include William Paul and Joseph Paxton.
