Seller: Hünersdorff Rare Books ABA ILAB, London, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: USED_GOOD. 8vo. 380pp. With lithograph title-page and 31 engraved illustrations, most full-page, one signed, in text. Publisher's cloth, gilt title; very slightly worn. A monthly garden calendar with bold illustrations of individual blooms and fruit, and a flower-bed plan. Weekly instructions are followed by historical monographs, often on a florist's flower or an exotic (auricula, dahlia, ranunculus, passion flower, the cucumber)and notes and comment on matters of contemporary horticultural interest. An article on the 'formation of the flower bed' distils discussions throughout the book advocating the 'mingled flower garden', aesthetic preference for geometric parterres on grass rather than gravel and bearing in mind the vast amount of plants being introduced, a caution to confine 'rarity and variety . to the botanical flower-garden'. Contributors include William Paul and Joseph Paxton.
