It was Regensteiner who in 1894 first put the colortype process of letterpress printing on a workable basis. His development of the Three- and Four-Color process made the color reproduction of pictures commonplace. Before that color printing was rare and only possible from stone using lithography. Esquire magazine, among others, owes much of its early success to Regensteiner's cost-effective color reproductions of men's fashions, cartoons and ads. Regensteiner provides some fascinating information on the engraving and printing industries in turn-of-the-century Chicago. In his preface, A. E. Giegengack, Public Printer of the U.S., writes that Regensteiner is to the color printing of pictures what the Wright Brothers are to aviation. The second part of the book (pp. 209-272) is FIFTY YEARS OF COLORTYPE PRINTING by A. G. Fegert. Illustrated with numeous plates; but perhaps oddly, nothing in color. Index. Bound in the original gilt-stamped beige cloth with a maroon cloth spine. Complete with dust jacket. INSCRIBED / SIGNED by Regensteiner . First Edition. Hardcover.
