In 223 pages with an Introduction & selected writings by the artist himself, Preface by fine arts publisher of Erte's work, Jack Solomon, followed by the prints in chronological order, each a full-page, pages 26-216. A FIRST EDITION, Third Printing, this folio (10.5" x 13.75") has gray silk cloth-covered boards with blindstamped design to front & silver lettering to spine. Condition is Near Fine, downgraded due to slight fading to extremities & a faint but noticeable odor (doesn't smell like nicotine, & no yellowing, but it is there). Else, exceptionally clean & bright, pages white & unmarked save for old gift inscription in pen to ffep. Colors vivid, binding strong & straight, corners crisp. The unclipped DJ is also Near Fine, with just a hint of edgewear; beautifully protected in new clear mylar cover free (removed for photos). The roots of this movement were in geometric motifs, luxuriant colours and graceful curvilinear feminine lines. Art Deco was the first comprehensive style to make 'modernism' in art widely popular. But the very popularity of Art Deco contained within it the seeds of its downfall, for when Art Deco was mass-produced to meet growing demand, much of its excellence of materials and craftsmanship had to be sacrificed, even though such excellence was critical to the Art Deco statement. It is probable that Erte's meticulous, luxurious, superbly crafted graphics succeed so well to some extent because they re-establish many of the significant attributes of classical Art Deco - that magical fusion of sleek design, exquisite materials, and superb craftsmanship. But Erte's graphics are timeless - an art which can be appreciated today as much as it was in the Twenties. Publication of this book marks the artist's ninetieth year and his seventieth year of work in the visual arts.
