Ce catalogue a été édité à l'occasion de l'exposition "Jules et Paul Marmottan collectionneurs" présentée au musée Marmottan, à Paris, en 1990. Originaire du Quesnoy, la…famille Marmottan se fixe à Valenciennes sous le règne de Louis XV. Né dans la cité du Hainaut en 1829, Jules Marmottan prend en charge, après des études de droit, la direction de la Société des Houillières de Bruay, dans le Pas-de-Calais, ville dont il est élu maire en 1870. Collectionneur dans l'âme, sa curiosité le mène principalement vers les primitifs allemands, flamands et italiens. Il acquiert nombre de ses oeuvres chez l'antiquaire et restaurateur lillois Antoine Brasseur, établi à Cologne de 1847 à 1887. Son fils, Paul Marmottan, naît à Paris en 1856. Après des études de droit, il est nommé conseiller de préfecture à Evreux, en 1882. A la mort de son père, l'année suivante," il se trouve à la tête d'une fortune considérable qui lui permet de se consacrer exclusivement à ses recherches artistiques et historiques. Recherches qui couvrent la période du Consulat et de l'Empire et plus particulièrement la Toscane napoléonienne. Paul Marmottan a rassemblé ses collections de peintures, de meubles et de bronzes Empire dans l'hôtel particulier dont son père avait fait l'acquisition un an avant sa mort. En 1934, cette demeure deviendra le musée Marmottan.
