The first edition was printed in 1577 (2nd in 1579) and became a very successful and influential treatise dealing with politics, education, popular science, courtesan manners and natural philosophy. The 'Suite' was first printed in 1580 in three different issues. It is a "prose compendium of scientific, moral and philosophical knowledge", Stuart Gillespie, Shakespeare's Books, London: Bloomsbury, 2001, page 277. "The French Academy has a number of striking similarities with Bacon's program for the reformation of knowledge. It introduces a school of wisdom dedicated to the study of natural philosophy as a form of 'medicina mentis', a 'certaine remedy and sound medicine for every vice and passion', 'able to enrich and cloath us with reason' (La Primaudaye, 1618, 16)", Dana Jalobeanu, "Natural History and the Medicine of the Mind: The Roots of Francis Bacon's Great Instauration", 2012.
