This medium-sized hard cover book (6 x 8 ½ x 2 inches, 480 pages) was published by the Union Publishing House of New York, Boston, Cincinnati and Atlanta dated 1883 and apparently the First Edition with the same date on title and copyright pages. It was Sold only by subscription and one can imagine itinerant salesmen carrying it out to the farms and villages of the States, much to the amazement of people who rarely if ever even were able to go to the oceans. The list of illustrations includes 22 (full-page, blank on the reverse) plates. I did notice that at least one of those plates was not present although there is no sign that it was torn out or even ever there and could have been missed in the printing. The page edges are full gilt all round. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers are slightly bumped on the edges and corners but still very presentable, particularly at the spine. The book is unmarked and the pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. The front hinge is partially torn and the rear intact with a tight and sound binding. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Good hardcover with clean pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth boards with highly decorative stamped design with blue, black and gold. Minor shelf wear and scuff marks to covers and spine. One small pin hole in the spine. Binding is cracking at the hinges, but no pages appear to be missing or loose. Back cover has some water damage and the red dye from the cloth has bled onto the bottom edge of page 475 to the back end page, but this does not affect the text. Previous owner attached an ex-libris sticker to the upper left corner on the inside of the front cover. ; 9 X 6.25 x 1.75 inches.

End papers are decorated. First front end paper has a tear. Other front end paper has owner's inscription. Other than tear and some very light rubbing of spine ends and corners, this book is in excellent condition. Fore edges are marbled. This book is extraordinary. A popular treatise on the broad ocean: its laws; its phenomena; its products and its inhabitants; graphically describing its currents, tides, waves; whirlpools, water-spouts, typhoons and trade winds; its coral reefs, pearls, shells, sponges, fisheries.

Hardcover.  Green boards, decorated in black and gilt, lightly soiled, rubbed and shelfworn, with gilt still bright, but wornalong edges, spine ends and edge points. All edges gilt, with some scratches. Internally free of previous owners marks or signatures, but with occasional smudges scattered throughout. The binding is tight with hinges intact, but cracked between 2-3 end-pages, Overall a very good copy.
