First published in 1788, this important dictionary long remained a key reference work in mythology and classical history. Lempriere wrote this work with the aim to give the most accurate account of all proper names which occur in the Classics, hoping to use historical facts and anecdotes to provide an entertaining and informative view of ancient times. Written by John Lempriere, an English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, teacher and headmaster. Corrected and enlarged by Professor Anthon and E. H. Barker. Further adapted to the present state by the Rev. J. A. Giles, late fellow of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. With the bookplate of James F. N. Lawrence and an ink inscription from William Charles Wilks, dated 1847. Bound in full calf. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing to extremities and joints, with light marks to the boards. Hinges have been reinforced internally. Spine has darkened. Bookplate and ink inscription to front paste down, with offsetting to front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
