It was the worst travesty of American justice since the infamous Scottsboro trials in Alabama more than half a century earlier. When the bullet-riddled bodies of a young white couple were found on May 12, 1978, the leader of the police investigation declared that he wanted the crime solved - fast. A tight and handsome first edition of this "Eighteen-Year Fight to Save Four Innocent Man," as the front jacket panel proclaims. Not only have both authors signed (in blue ballpoint and purple fineline, respectively) the front flyleaf -- but two of the book's four subjects, Dennis Williams and Kenneth Adams (who dates his "9-3-98"), have also signed in ink as well. Williams, Adams and two other Chicago black men were falsely accused of a 1978 rape and double murder, convicted and imprisoned -- Protess and Warden headed the team that proved their innocence and got them released.
