Benjamin hatte Glück das Manuskript der Berliner Kindheit" gesandt, um es in einem geeigneten Verlag unterzubringen.[] Es hat [] mit dem in Ihrem Besitz befindlichen Manuscript die besondere Bewandtnis, daß es das einzige ist über das ich abgesehen natürlich von meinem Handexemplar verfüge. Es vervielfältigen zu lassen, bin ich augenblicklich nicht in der Lage. Das bedeutet, daß ein Angebot an den Humanitas-Verlag nur auf Grundlage des in Ihrer Hand be ndlichen Manuscripts möglich wäre. Und das macht mich zögern solange wenigstens als Sie selbst noch irgend welche Verwertungschancen für diese Arbeit sehen. Gewiß wäre ein Druck in der Schweiz in vieler Hinsicht das Beste. Aber meinen Erfahrungen nach haben briefliche Angebote meiner Arbeiten insgemein wenig Aussichten; und eine beredte Sprache noch sprechen unter meinen Erfahrungen die, welche die Betreuung von Manuscripten durch Verlagsanstalten betreffen, zu denen man in keiner näheren Beziehung steht.Dies alles würde mich veranlassen, das Manuscript nur dann in Zürich anzubieten, wenn Sie mir nach Ihren eigenen Erfahrungen mit ihm das anraten würden []Immerhin scheint mir wichtig, Sie von einem zu verständigen: So dringend ich mir wünschen muß, durch meine Arbeit meine Existenz sicher zu stellen, so würden gerade diesem Manuscript gegenüber die materiellen Rücksichten bei mir die letzte Stelle einnehmen, das überwiegende Interesse in diesem Falle ist mein Interesse am Druck. Es wäre ein großer Wunsch von mir, sie zu besitzen. Denn gewichtige Stimmen verbürgen mir, daß ich aus Altenberg Vieles zu nehmen habe und doch ist mir ein eigentlicher Zugang durch die Werke, die er bei Lebzeiten erscheinen ließ, nicht geglückt []"Berlin 24.I.1932. Darum ist diese Darstellung, in der der Mann sich so einsichtig vorm Fond seiner Lebensumstände präsentiert für mich außerordentlich anziehend gewesen. Es wäre in der Tat sehr zu wünschen, daß solche Arbeiten nicht gänzlich von der Gelegenheit abhingen, sondern in planvoller Folge von Ihnen zu erwarten stünden []" Hebel war der Herold, der Benjamins Auffassung mustergültigen Erzählens prägte" (A. In einiger Zeit wird, so hoffe ich, mein Essay über Nikolai Lesskow erscheinen und ich werde ihn Ihnen zuschicken.Zum Schluß will ich nicht versäumen, Ihnen zu erzählen, daß ich Ihren Hebel-Aufsatz Karl Thieme, einem alten Verehrer von Hebels Prosa zugänglich machte und daß er die erwartete tiefe Wirkung auf ihn getan hat []"Eduard Fuchs, der Sammler und Historiker" erschien in diesem Jahr in der von Max Horkheimer herausgegebenen Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung"; der Aufsatz Der Erzähler. Betrachtungen zum Werk Nikolai Lesskows" wurde für das Oktoberheft 1936 der Zeitschrift Orient und Occident" gedruckt, das wohl verspätet erschien.Paris (wohl Mitte Mai 1937). [] Sie geben mir immer wieder Anlaß, die Fürsorge dankbar zu empfinden, die Sie meinem Buche entgegenbringen. Ich werde mich ihr weiter anheimgeben.Den 'Trakl' habe ich mit großem Anteil gelesen. Wenn der Dichter selbst nicht, wie Hebel, zu den mir vertrautesten Figuren gehört, so ist mir in Ihren Zeilen seine Gestalt umso näher gerückt.Ich fürchte, daß Sie die mögliche Gegengabe, den 'Lesskow' so bald nicht erwarten können ja ich werde zufrieden sein, wenn er überhaupt noch erscheinen sollte. Es ist nicht gewiß, daß die Schweizer Zeitschrift 'Orient und Okzident', die ihn erworben hat, noch ein Heft herausbringt []Ist Ihnen die Stifter-Biographie zu Gesicht gekommen, die vor kurzem bei Rowohlt erschienen ist?" Vielleicht wissen Sie, daß Kinderbücher einmal mein Sammelgebiet gewesen sind (ich habe früher mancherlei darüber publiziert). Meine ehemalige Sammlung besteht noch sie befindet sich hier in San Remo. Ich würde gern etwas für das Rümannsche Buch tun; halte auch wohl für möglich, daß ich ihm eine Seite abgewinne, die mich in Stand setzt, in der 'Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung', die mir offen steht, darauf hinzuweisen.Es tut mir leid, die Anschaffung dieses Buches mir nicht erlauben zu können. An seinem Studium wäre mir ungemein gelegen ich sage nicht zuviel. Und vielleicht würde selbst der Verfasser ein Wort für mich einlegen, wenn er wüßte, daß die wenigen bedeutsamen illustrierten Werke, die ich meiner Bibliothek durch den Wechsel der Jahre habe bewahren können, aus der münchener Versteigerung seiner alten Sammlung durch Emil Hirsch stammen []"(Paris.
