Pictorial Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Phillips, Barye (illustrator). First Edition. First Edition, May 1954. PAPERBACK ORIGINAL. Vintage paperback, Gold Medal #397 [.25 cover price]. Cover Illustration by Barye Phillips. Spine edge rubbed, a few cover creases, a few nicks at rear, paper is uniformally age toned, else very good. A gripping legal thriller by the Edgar Award-winning author who wrote the Peter Duluth Puzzle Mysteries as Patrick Quentin, also penned outstanding detective novels from the 1930s through the 1960s under other pseudonyms, including Q. Patrick and Jonathan Stagge. Eighth in the Series of Classic Murder Trials. There was nothing apparently remarkable about Percy Thompson and his wife, Edith. But when Percy is savagely stabbed to death, the proper appearance of their marriage collapses, revealing a dark side that will become the scandal of the nation. For behind their bland suburban veneer was a relationship already fractured by petty jealousy and a wife's desire for more out of life. A desire that was satisfied by young Frederick Bywaters, who found himself under Edith's spell almost immediately and would follow his devotion to the end of a rope --all the while proclaiming Edith's innocence. Written as both a compelling thriller and an observation of the law, morality, and the crushing weight of public opinion, The Girl on the Gallows is a classic chronicle of blinding love, cold-blooded murder, and inevitable justice. Patrick Quentin, best known for the Peter Duluth puzzle mysteries, also penned outstanding detective novels from the 1930s through the 1960s under other pseudonyms, including Q. Patrick and Jonathan Stagge. Anthony Boucher wrote: "Quentin is particularly noted for the enviable polish and grace which make him one of the leading American fabricants of the murderous comedy of manners; but this surface smoothness conceals intricate and meticulous plot construction as faultless as that of Agatha Christie.". Condition: Good. - A 5 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide sienna-toned portrait of the playwright and author Owen Davis clipped from a periodical and mounted onto a 7-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide sheet clipped from yet another periodical or program. The portrait is inscribed and signed below the image "To Seymour Halpern / Owen Davis / Feb, 1930". The portrait was once folded and there is creasing and a short tear to the left edge of the page on which it is mounted. A portion of a color illustration is pictured on the verso. Good. The American dramatist Owen Gould Davis (1874-1956) was awarded the 1923 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play "Icebound". Davis authored hundreds of plays as well as scripts for radio and film and also wrote for the Police gazette under the pseudonym of Ike Swift. His first play "Through the Breakers" opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1897 and a subsequent play "Reaping the Whirlwind" opened on Broadway in 1900. Though he penned most of his plays either under his own name or under the pseudonym of John Oliver, he also made use of several other pseudonyms including Martin Hurley, Arthur J. Lamb, Walter Lawrence, and Robert Wayne. The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation.

First English edition. 232pp. This is a descriptive study of the Russian purges of 1936-39 drawn from numerous personal experiences by a Soviet historian and a German scientist, writing under pseudonyms. It outlines the developments leading up to the purge and the anatomy of the purge process, including methods of selecting victims, securing denunciations and fabricating charges as well as the extraction of confession. Finally, it classifies the many theories used by the prisoners to rationalize these methods and evaluates their effect on the political maturity of the Russian people. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The bottom corners and spine ends are bumped and the spine is slightly cocked with wear to the titling. The contents are tight and clean with a small purple oblong stamp from The Times Library, Wigmore Street, London, on the bottom of the rear fixed endpaper. There is no inscription.
