Wie lässt sich in das Dispositiv der zeitgenössischen Fotografie ein Fotograf bewerten, der mit seinen Landschaften keinerlei Berührungsängste zur Kunstfotografie des vorvergangenen Jahrhunderts zeigt ? Ein Fotograf, der darüber hinaus mit den Mitteln der Groteske andere Menschen und vor allem sich selbst so inszeniert, dass man hier von einer ebenso sarkastischen wie mitleidenden "Anteilnahme" sprechen kann. "Das Groteske ist eine der großen Möglichkeiten, genau zu sein. .Sie ist nicht die Kunst der Nihilisten, sondern weit eher der Moralisten, nicht die des Moders, sondern des Salzes. Die ist eine Angelegenheit des Witzes und des scharfen Verstandes, nicht dessen, was das Publikum unter Humor versteht, einer bald sentimentalen, bald frivolen Gemütlichkeit. Sie ist unbequem, aber nötig", wusste Friedrich Dürrenmatt zum Grotesken mitzuteilen. Heute Schönheit ohne Kunstersatz zu produzieren ist umso schwerer, als alles um uns herum von Medien geprägt ist - vom Megaplakat über das Fernsehen zum Internet. Nun kann man das Bild als Kunstform entweder aufgeben - oder versuchen, es neu zu präzisieren. Genau das hat Martin Pudenz hier getan. Dabei verzichtet er auf jegliche digitale Möglichkeit und greift auf den Bromöldruck zurück, eine Technik, die schon um 1900 entwickelt wurde und die uns Pudenz wie einen Magier erscheinen lässt.Der Begriff bezeichnet etwas irreführend kein Druck- oder Vervielfältigungsverfahren, sondern im Gegenteil aufwendig hergestellte Unikate, die nicht zuletzt zu einer Entschleunigung der Bildproduktion führen. Dass der Rückgriff auf eine ältere Technik keine Resignation vor der Gegenwart darstellen muss, sondern den Blick nach vorne öffnen kann, hat sich in der Kunstgeschichte schon des öfteren als richtig erwiesen. Martin Pudenz gelangt dabei zu einer operativen Motivik, die sich ebenso auf eine gelassene Ansicht der Außenwelt wie auch auf die inszenatorische Innenansicht des Menschseins bezieht. Über viele Jahre hat der Fotograf das Magazin der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung mitgeprägt und Beiträge für zahlreiche andere Zeitschriften und Buchprojekte geliefert.
