Mit der Tendenz zur Miniaturisierung, lassen sich für die pneumatischen Ventile neue und bessere Anwendungen in vielen verschiedenen Bereichen finden. Diese weisen viele Vorteile auf, z. B. kleine Baugröße, geringes Gewicht, minimaler elektrischer Leistungsbedarf, schnelle Schaltzeit und ein weiter Temperaturbereich. Elektromagnetischer Antrieb ist der häufigste Antrieb beim pneumatischen Ventil. Es wird auf verschiedenen Wegen versucht, den elektromagnetischen Antrieb zu optimieren. Der flache Elektromagnet ist eine sehr gute Konstruktionsalternative und bringt auch viele wichtige Änderungen in Statik, Dynamik und Thermik mit sich. Hauptsächlich wegen der begrenzten Stromtragfähigkeit erreichen die konventionellen Fertigungstechnologien oft ihre Grenzen. Aber dank vieler neuer Fertigungstechniken, ist die Herstellung von miniaturisierten Strukturen nicht nur technisch möglich, sondern auch qualitativ und effizient.
