The full title is: 'An Address to the Quarterly, Monthly and Preparative Meetings, and the Members thereof, composing the Yearly Meeting of Friends, held in Philadelphia, By the Committee appointed at the late Yearly Meeting to have charge of the Subject of Slavery.' 12pp, 12mo. Pamphlet in (original?) plain brown wraps. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Begins with two pages of extracts from the minutes, 17 May 1839, regarding the setting up of the committee on 'the deeply interesting subject of Slavery', with reference to 'Benjamin Price, Jr. Clerk' and 'Deborah F. Wharton, Clerk.' The address itself, 'Signed by direction and on behalf of the Committee, by | John Jackson, Clerk', is eight pages long. Towards the beginning it notes that 'Many of our forefathers were slave-holders, and the unrighteous practice of holding our fellow-creatures in bondage, was not then forbidden by our discipline.' The change of policy is described, with reference to 'Anthony Benezet and John Woolman'. Later the address notes: 'The advancement of this righteous concern, and the increase of light upon the subject of human rights, are causing this system of iniquity to totter to its base. Hence, under the influence of fearful excitement, many are putting forth their strength to impede the progress of principles, which, if ultimately triumphant, will break the fetters of the slave. A part of the trading interests at the North is evidently involved with those of the South, and an influence is in this way exerted against the onward course of Emancipation; thus light and darkness antagonize each other.' And later still: 'Within a few years, great events hae occurred in relation to Slavery, and much light has been spread on the subject. The experience derived from Emancipation in the British West Indies, has opened a new era. [.] while we have painful evidence that a great body of slave-holders are influenced by injustice and cruelty [.] There are many whose consciences are burdened by a system which they derived from their ancestors, [.] the money of the slave-trader is temptingly held up before them; [.] they cannot separate the tender ties of family connexion among their slaves; they dare not receive the price of blood. [.] We believe they are fervently desiring the deliverance of master and slave, from the bondage to which both are subjected. Their hearts have bounded with joy at the success of Emancipation in the British West Indies; it has opened a door of hope thaty they also may be legally permitted to prove the advantage of requited labour, over that which is extorted by the lash of the oppressor. [.]'. The entries on OCLC WorldCat are not clear, but the item is uncommon.

Published by AE's five letters on letterheads of 30 Ennismore Gardens S.W. London 3; and Spring Bank Oldham 2; four of them from between and 1907 the other undated. GHE's letter on letterhead of 35 Grosvenor Road Claughton Birkenhead; 1903, 1905
Manuscript / Paper Collectible
The six items, totalling 9pp., are in fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, George H. Emmott's letter having slight wear at head. The recipient was Charles J. Holdsworth of Sunnyside, Wilmslow, Cheshire. AE's first letter responds briefly to Holdsworth's congratulations (on Emmott's appointment as Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee); the second letter sends what 'appears to be an old scrap book of Henry King's' (Holdsworth's uncle), with reference to 'old Friends' books of his'; the third (no more than a note) states his 'only objection' as 'publication in the newspaper' ; the fourth (and longest, at two full 4to pages) gives his views (27 April 1907) on 'Haldane's Territorial & Reserve Forces Bill': 'I do not vote, on account of my official post, but I do not want to pass by this communication from the Society of Friends without acknowledgment'. He is not commenting as he is 'out of political strife for the time being', but is 'tempted to say (privately) that I am told the number of volunteers from boys who have been in Cadet Corps is far smaller proportionately than from the general male population. The reason stated is that military training, even of that imperfect kind, lessens rather than increases the military spirit. I wonder if it really is so. If it is, we need not fear the moral effect of military training very much. For any danger but that of the military spirit is not to be feared & the physical results are good enough.' AE's fifth letter refers Holdsworth to his brother George, who, with his wife, will probably know 'who took most of these books'. George H. Emmott's letter, dated 12 July 1903, is 3pp., 8vo, and discusses AE's school days at the Quaker School in Kendal: 'I remember, however, that on one occasion when his half yearly report came home, it contained the remark from Henry Thompson that he combined the good qualities of both his elder brothers, - meaning, I believe my studiousness and love of books, and our brother John's love of games & outdoor exercise. I do not know how it arose, but his nickname at school, where he was quite a general favourite, wwas "Madam," [.]'.

4°, early plain dark blue wrappers, stitched (loosening). Typographical "mustache" on title page. Light soiling and some creases. In good to very good condition. 24 pp. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION; signed in print at the end by Samuel Parsons and Anne Mott, clerks. The narration begins with a description of the "spirit of unbelief and libertinism, which has long been secretly insinuating itself amongst us." Pages 8-11 are a detailed account of how the "separatists" disrupted the Society's daily business in New York, even changing the locks so orthodox members could not hold committee meetings. Pages 11-22 offer quotes from Elias Hicks and counter-arguments from the writings of William Penn, George Whitehead, and others. In A Doctrinal Epistle Purporting to Be an Exposition of Christian Doctrine, 1824, Elias Hicks, an itinerant Quaker preacher from Long Island, argued that the most important principle of worship (among the Friends and elsewhere) was obedience to the Inner Light, which he considered more authoritative than the Bible. Hicks publicly stated his beliefs at the 1826 Philadelphia Yearly Meeting. By 1827, Philadelphia Quakers had split into orthodox and "Hicksites." In the next few years, the annual meetings at New York, Baltimore, Ohio and Indiana also split. The Hicksite faction is (roughly) the confederation of Quakers known today as the Friends General Conference.*** Shoemaker, Checklist of American imprints for 1820-1829, 33294.
