Hardcover. Condition: Good. Recently rebound in full calf with leather from original boards relaid, spine with 5 raised bands, endpapers renewed. 8vo. Pagination runs (2) i-xxxv, (1) 1 - 43 (7) 35 - 309 (7). Engraved frontispiece and 10 leaves of plates, some folded. 19th century owner s bookplate to front pastedown - J. H . Hogarth. Title page has part of title -Gard'ner - cut out with blank repair (see photo), and previous owner s signature in old brown ink - Henry Hewitt. Frontispiece is backed. Some water-staining to introductory pages i - xxxv; occasional light foxing; 2 inch tear to margin of p.101 with no loss; tear, mended, to p. 207 with no loss; p. 226 and 231 misnumbered, although text is continuous. A restored copy of a well-used and important book, the rarer of 2 issues, this one being sold by Andrew Bell. ESTC R221179 Jean-Baptiste de La Quintinye was gardener to Louis XIV, in charge of the royal fruit and vegetable gardens and created a new potager at Versailles. The introduction to this work is an Advertisement to the Nobility and Gentry with Precautions to avoid the disappointment which comes from neglect. This is followed by Some Rules for the Defence of Gardens before the main body of text begins. The illustrations are mainly about pruning . To the rear there is a list of seeds which should be grown in the Kitchen-Garden, from Alleluia, Anis and Artichokes to Tripe-Madam, Violets and Wormwood, with their individual care, followed by a Gard ner s Kalendar. The 7 unnumbered pages at the end are the Contents of the Chapters.

Tome II : 344 pages avec 11 planches hors-texte, très bels tête de chapitre gravées et quelques croquis gravés dans le texte, suit L'ART OU LA MANIERE & SEURE DE TAILLER LES ARBRES FRUITIERS avec un dictionnaire des termes dont se servent les jardiniers, en parlant des arbres 19 pages, 7 figures dans le texte. Puis suivent avec une pagination commune : le NOUVEAU TRAITE DE LA CULTURE DES MELONS sous un climat tel qu'est celui des provinces unies 8 pages, NOUVELLE INSTRUCTION POUR LA CULTURE DES FLEURS contenant la manière de les cultiver & les ouvrages qu'il faut faire chaque mois de l'année selon leurs différentes espèces avec un catalogue des fleurs les plus belles et les plus rares deux feuillets non chiffré dont le titre et le sommaire puis la pagination reprend à la page 9 jusqu'à la page 140 ; manque la pièce de titre, le coin supérieur des 100 derniers pages (du dernier traité) a été mouillé, on ne détecte que quelques taches foncées marginales jusqu'à la page 110 puis ensuite la mouillure apparait de façon importante pour finir colorée sur les 10 dernières pages, la pourriture du papier est arrêté, il n'y a pas de manque. L'exemplaire reste très attractif malgré ce défaut qui mériterait restauration. Livraison a domicile (La Poste) ou en Mondial Relay sur simple demande.
