Publisher's original olive green cloth, printed paper label to front with decorative border, priced at two shillings and sixpence, yellow endpapers and publisher's catalogue to rear, general wear and rubbing, with evidence of liquid staining (see photo), this has become a brown stain that affects the bottom of all the leaves, in spite of this the text is largely unaffected, a couple of small creases to page corners, a little weakness to front and rear hinges, else a sound example; an early reprinting of this early piece of Dickensiana - the original being published by Chapman & Hall in 1838 - a response to Edward Caswall ("Quiz")'s "Sketches of Young Ladies" published the previous year, which Dickens described as an "ungallant attack upon the fair sex". 68, [1], [8 catalogue]pp.

Dark green embossed cloth and plain green spine with a 1 cm closed split on top of front hinge; 5 cm x 7 m soiled label lettered and decorated in black center front. Internally yellow endpapers partly stained, the gutter at front starting to crack and a 5 mm hole in ffep. Some staining to frontis and title page, with marks on latter's reverse side; contents clean apart from marks in margins of page 15, significant stains on pages 16/17 & 18, slight marks on Index page and foxing to ads at rear.
