First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. John Newman (illustrator). 1st Edition. This is "Monkey Wrenches and Household Saints : Recent Sculpture by John Newman" . It is an exhibition catalog with color photographs of Newman's work. The catalog celebrates the exhibition held from September 5 to October 7, 2005 at the Clifford Gallery, Little Hall , at Colgate University. "Jon Newman's sculptures demand a commitment to the pleasure and exigency of discovery : of unconscious desires, aesthetic bliss, physical incongruity. Like the Surrealists' objets interprétés, poetic transformations result from the displacement and juxtaposition of unrelated objects, and meaning is attributed by the negation of any real or imagined function. Marble and foam core, bronze and bamboo, lead and crystal and broken glass are ; melded and moulded into forms that remain intimate in scale while at the same time are suggestive of an expansive imagination. "Inspiration comes from many sources and in numerous forms : Indian baskets, Japanese puppets and samurai helmets, African sceptres, all of which inform a process that might be called 'structural improvisation': a controlled , almost mathematical precision coupled with unconscious, automatic improvisation. Letting the imagination roam freely, Newman methodically works his materials while at the same time allowing them to dictate variations in compositional structure, much like free jazz, with its limitless, often impenetrable and dissonant fluctuations." Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. David Sharpe (Front cover photograph) and Donna A. (illustrator). xiv, 370 pages. Illustrations. Interviews. Notes. Index. The DJ has minor wear and soiling. Inscribed by the authorizer/author Eleanor Holmes Norton on the title page. Inscription reads Eleanor Holmes Norton to Mook, My friend and the man the [unclear] cannot do without! Foreword by Coretta Scott King. Ink notation on Dedication Page may be related to the author [Lester]. Dr. Lester is the author of six critically acclaimed books. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, USA Today, CNN, Ebony, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Chicago Tribune, Black Issues Book Review, Ms., Cosmopolitan, Common Dreams, and Huffington Post, among others. Eleanor Holmes Norton (born June 13, 1937) is an American lawyer and politician serving as a delegate to the United States House of Representatives, representing the District of Columbia since 1991. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to serving in Congress, Holmes Norton organized for Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee during the civil rights movement and was chair of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Norton was on the founding advisory board of the Women's Rights Law Reporter (founded 1970), the first legal periodical in the United States to focus exclusively on the field of women's rights law. In the early 1970s, Norton was a signer of the Black Woman's Manifesto, a classic document of the Black feminist movement. She is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Black Caucus. Derived from a Kirkus review: In a gratifying autobiography/biography, journalist Lester tells the story with the help of significant patches of quotations from Norton. Readers will get a strong taste of Norton's forceful personality and the constancy and vigor of her convictions, which are sometimes expressed with a passion that can make her seem overbearing. The roots of Norton's activism are easy to discern in the proud and loving portrayal here of her ancestors, fugitive slaves who fashioned a life in Washington, D.C. The importance of familyâ"a theme Norton will return to again and again in her careerâ"is seen as she describes the importance of her mother and father. She details her years at Antioch and Yale and with SNCC, her radicalism and grassroots participatory philosophy, then her distancing from the Black Power movement, for "once Black Power became black racism, hey, they left me too. . . . The great unifying philosophies are what keep hold." That sense of unity is what allowed her to operate so effectively within the public sphere, in New York City's Human Rights Commission, at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and as congresswoman from Washington, tackling a swath of issues ranging from D.C. statehood through discriminatory practices wherever they might be and on to the Clarence Thomas appointment. A well-framed memoir, satisfyingly candid while also abrim with political theory: a filigreed work that maps Norton's evolution as an advocate for human rights. First Atria Books hardcover printing January 2003 [stated].
