Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. R. H. Nibbs (illustrator). Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Bound in decorative de bossed cloth boards with gilt title on front and decorative pattern on rear. Mostly mild rub to hinges and board edges, binding really good plus. Interior consists of 52 lithographed pages consisting of; a title page, table of contents page followed by 50 single sided plates of sweet pen and ink like sketches of historical buildings and views of Sussex. Title page has moderate foxing, rest of plates have none, just a bit of mild toning. Title page and binding state "first series". Previous owners book plate inside front board.
1st edition. Maroon pebbled cloth boards, gilt lettering and black decoration to front cover. Small folio, 15.25ins x 11ins. Comprises illustrated title page, index with illustration above and fifty full page drawings by the author. Title page and verso of final page browned. Light foxing to a few plates. First edition. Quarto (28 x 22.5cm). pp. [iv],72ff. With 84 etched plates. Designated 'First Series' on the title, the work was later re-issued in 1872, edited by M.A. Lower, with additional plates, but all reproduced by photolithography rather than etching as here. Some very occasional light foxing to the plates, some text leaves with toning due to paper type. Otherwise a pleasant copy bound in contemporary half morocco, gilt, the spine head slighty worn. Vg. [Slade Butler 229; Ford 693; Hernaman 71; Pinnock 286].

All complete and beautifully clean throughout. Binding in remarkably clean and sound condition also. No inscriptions. A fascinating range of Sussex buildings (including many ruins and semi-ruins), old houses, bridges, mills, all sketched distinctlvely by R. H Nibbs. Thought to be a relatively limited printing, now particularly scarce in this complete form. VG+.

Tissue-guarded frontispiece. Detailed sketches of the churches by Nibbs. Additionally, an early prev. owner has neatly pasted-in (at blank adjoining page versos) several 19th century pictorial clippings (smaller plates) that give additional views of each church and surroundings, mostly b/w etchings, but one a vividly coloured chromolithographic. Origins of clippings not stated, but they appear to be from other mid-19th C. books or periodicals Prev. owner 1891 inscription to title page. Light occasional foxing, milder foxing to the plate outer borders. Etchings themselves all clean. Binding sound. A splendid array of the county's ancient churches, VG+.
