Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. 3 pages. The report outlines a disturbing case heard in Sierra Leone, summarising the accusations, the cultural context and the testimony brought before the court. The article presents the proceedings with stark brevity, reflecting both the gravity and the complexity of the charges.… The trial of Pei, held in Freetown, Sierra Leone, in 1819, centred on the brutal killing of Zongobia, allegedly with a sharpened iron hoop, followed by acts of cannibalism. Conducted under British colonial jurisdiction, the proceedings marked an attempt to apply metropolitan legal frameworks to a frontier context. Peis defence, if any, is sparsely recorded, and the cases sensational tone reflects both the racialized prejudices and lurid fascination typical of early 19th-century criminal reporting. Published in Celebrated Trials (1825), the account served more as moral spectacle than forensic analysis, revealing how colonial violence and cultural othering were woven into legal narratives. An authentic standalone article, extracted from the annual volume. Not a reprint or reproduction, but an original work in its own right. Supplied without title page or cover. Now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable rebinding that favours function over finery. Size: 11.5 x 19 cms. Category: Celebrated Trials; Special Interest. Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1658, Dr John Hewet, a Royalist clergyman and outspoken critic of the Protectorate, was tried before the High Court of Justice for high treason. Hewet had refused to take the oath of allegiance to Oliver Cromwell and was implicated in correspondence with exiled Royalists, includi…ng plans to restore Charles II. His trial was part of a broader crackdown on Royalist conspiracies and dissenting voices within England. Hewet conducted his defence with dignity, asserting the illegitimacy of the court and the lawfulness of monarchy. Despite his eloquence and support from sympathisers, he was found guilty and executed, becoming a martyr figure for those who opposed Cromwell's rule and longed for the return of the king. 13 pages, printed in double columns. Booklet - Unbound Pages. Condition: Very Good. In 1657, Miles Sindercome, an ex-soldier and radical Fifth Monarchist was tried at the Upper Bench in Westminster for high treason, having plotted to assassinate Oliver Cromwell. Operating under the alias ÃâÃâ¡Ã£Fish,ÃâÃâ¡ÃË Sindercome had conspired with others to ambush the Lord P…rotector during his public movements, even acquiring poison and firearms for the task. The plot was foiled before it could be enacted, and Sindercome was arrested and brought before Lord Chief Justice Glynn and Mr Justice Warburton. His trial revealed the depth of discontent among radical sects who saw Cromwell as a tyrant rather than a deliverer. Before sentence could be carried out, Sindercome took his own life in prison, sealing his fate as both conspirator and martyr in the eyes of his sympathisers. 16 pages, printed in double columns. Printed between 1809 and 1826, these historic documents are vivid extracts from Cobbett's State Trials; pages from the courtroom record that preserve the voices, arguments, and verdicts which helped shape the course of British justice and still echo through its constitutional legacy. Over two centuries old, each leaf is a tangible fragment of legal history, compelling, original, and rarely encountered outside institutional collections. These are not reprints or replicas, but authentic 19th-century printings that are rich in drama, and steeped in history. This particular trial report has been removed from a volume of Cobbett's State Trials and is now preserved in a modern card cover for practicality - an unassuming but serviceable presentation that favours function over finery.
