Chaveau (1820-1890), Superintendent of Education for Lower Canada (1855-1867), es…tablished the Journal of Public Instruction in 1857 as a monthly periodical. Each issue includes articles on education, university history, appointments, official notices, literature, poetry and education related advertisements. The Journal was published, in both English and French, until 1879. Chaveau's tenure was noted for the establishment of normal and separate schools in Lower Canada. In 1867, he became the first prime minister of Quebec (1867-1873).
