Outsider art reflects a territory of cultural production that gives credence to creative practices independent of formal training, recognised art movements, and current trends. Outsider art is said to exist only because of cultural elitism and class differences where the margins are defined by the centre. Thus, outsider artists are dismissed twice: first, by those who hold status and power, and second, by the mainstream art world. Their marginalised social status, often due to mental health issues, has led to their exclusion from the world of contemporary art. This book challenges viewers to relinquish myths and stereotypes about the source of creativity and to embrace the work of self-taught creators who are compelled to express themselves in unique ways.
