Evans Gallery of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D. C. June 4-July 28, 1985. XX [From the flaps] ADITI looks at life in India through the world of the child, a world that reveals all of the richness and complexity of Indian culture. Rites of passage, fairs and festivals, performances and crafts, all drawing on ancient myth, legend, and belief, mark the path of the child's growth. As the fabric of Indian society becomes ever more technological, these traditions are challenged constantly. ADITI explores these ancient traditions in their contemporary contexts. In one of the ancient Hindu texts of India, the Rig Veda, Aditi is the mother of the gods - the source, the process, and the essence of life. Aditi unifies beginnings and endings, man and woman, nature and the gods. Her name denotes the creative power, abundant, joyful, and unbroken, that sustains the universe. This book takes its name from Aditi, since it is this creative power that inbues the child's world with India's myriad traditions in rural and ritual arts and performance. The goddess Aditi embodies the principle of cyclical regeneration. Every ending is a beginning, and the death of an individual signals his rebirth. The book traces this cycle of regeneration through seventeen stages of the life cycle: from coming of age through courtship and marriage, through birth and the steps of learning to participate in the life of the community, to once again the child's coming of age. Dr. Stella Kramrisch, in her essay on the ritual arts of India, notes that in a traditional Indian household rites accompany every stage of life even from before the birth of the newcomer. They celebrate, confirm, and smooth the stages of the path of the growing mind. In Aditi, these rites are vibrantly depicted in over 200 black-and-white and 70 color illustrations of wall paintings and floor drawings; of festivals and ceremonies; of ritual and household objects. Scenes of village life provide the context. Essays on mythology, music and performance, psychology, ethnography, and art describe an India both ancient and modern, both timeless and evolving.
