'R. examines Tibullus' elegies in their published order as a gradually unfolding drama, discussing in particular the poet's behaviour, motivation, and psychology as adumbrated in each. R. sees there a lover fi…lled with illusions and contradictions, misguided in his attempts to deal with each beloved (whose wishes he ignores) and deep down wanting to be dominated and maltreated. (.) some of this is obvious, some of it has already been said (.), and some of it is purely speculative. Can one really deduce from three mistakes a helpless masochist (rather than just a 'pauper amator' with unfortunate weakness for beautiful but mercenary types? (.) In any case R. dismisses almost entirely the literary side of the elegiac love affair. Not much love poetry was written on successful amatory relations; and Tibullus was a literary artist working in a distinct tradition, according to which the beloved was venal and cruel, the lover was not rich, suffered setbacks, etc. Within these conventions there ia naturally repetition; but there is in fact also much variation. There is not a strong sense of sameness in Tibullus as R. would have us believe (.). R. also tends to be too serious in his interpretations, not making due allwance for wit and humour (.). In addition he simplu assumes that the published order of the poems represents their actual order of composition (.). In R.'s favour, his style is clear and flowing, he has read widely in the secondary literature, and he does make some persceptive points (.).' (P. Le point de vue adopté est résolument psychologique; Cl. Rambaux cherche à mettre au jour les mécanismes de la vie effective et la découverte que les auteurs latins envisagés ont pu en faire eux-mêmes, au moins implicitement. (?) Pour Catulle, l?auteur part de l?hypothèse que le Catulli Veronensis ?Liber? forme un recueil satisfaisant, cohérent et organisé (?) où l?on peut lire une histoire d?amour suivie, imaginaire au moins pour une part mais présentée comme réelle. Le grand mérite de l?auteur est d?avoir pris en compte tous les poèmes, sans exclusion et sans déplacement, et de les avoir tous rattachés directement ou indirectement à l?aventure personnelle présentée par Catulle; ce qui requiert beaucoup de finesse et parfois d?ingéniosité. (?) Cl. Rambaux propose une double réhabilitation des ?Amores? d?avide. Loin d?y voir ?un poème d?amours sans amour?, il invite à prendre au sérieux le ?tenerorum lustre amour? Aussi sommes-nous conviés à suivre, d?élégie en élégie, une éducation sentimentale (?). D?autre part, mais les deux se tiennent, l?auteur entend faire valoir une cohérence d?ensemble, une solidité de composition, en dégageant des ?structures significatives?, dans chacun des trois livres des ?Amores? De nombreux principes d?organisation sont ainsi mis en avant; regroupements, correspondances entre les pièces, paires, triades, séries parallèles, jeux de symétrie, de similitude ou d?opposition (?). Le conte d?Amour et Psyché est traité plus rapidement (?); il offre pourtant le grand intérêt sans conteste une histoire d?amour et d?un amour présenté au féminin successivement et, au-delà des conditions de maturation personnelle des partenaires, il montre l?importance, pour la réussite de cet amour, des circonstances et de l?environnement où il prend place.
