He is recruited to become a one man destructive force for the Royal Flying Service. Given the most advance aircraft in the world at the time, his mission is to harass the Germans in any way possible, becoming a kind of deterrent force and attractive nuisance. He is so successful the German High Command makes his demise a priority. He is so skillful at aerial combat, though, they must finally send one of their best, Manfred von Richthofen. to rid the skies of the this maniac in a purple airplane. The battles between the Red Baron and the Purple Duke are only one of the many types of conflict in the story. There are the matters of the morality of war, war and love, war and soul, even war and business. Alan Roderick thinks he can settle these conflicts caused by war by finding peace. Instead, this former combat pilot and satellite orbit mathematician has been brought into the world of Pompeii Mudd, head of an unnamed group which protects American interests as no one else can. Mudd lets Tony's day job remain cover for various assignments in catching bad guys. In this episode, Tony is still waiting for his wife and family to join him in Washington. Mudd wants to use Tony's temporary bachelorhood one more time, now to romance a woman Tony has romanced and deserted once already. The woman, Amanda Uberall, is newly divorced from a former Air Force Intelligence Officer. Mudd believes Oscar Uberall is up to no good. Amanda knows Oscar always has been, at least in his treatment of her. But Oscar is nowhere to be found. The plan is to have Tony escort Amanda promiscuously, in an effort to draw out the elusive but very jealous exhusband. The man is ruthless and violent. Tony does seismology, and Top Secret satellite work. He doesn't do Ruthless and Violent. He has no choice, though, because Pompeii Mudd is the only person who stands between Tony and a court martial. Tony's paper boss is General Hawker Nash, and 'Hurricane' Nash despises Tony and wants his hide. The romance with Amanda goes farther than a faithfull Tony would like, but it does bring out Oscar. That's when the fun starts. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. De Luchi, Randy (illustrator). Paperback. Antoninus Gyro (Tony Hero), Major, USAF, is relatively happy. His wife has finally joined him in D.C., he's enjoying his day job as Chief of the Air Force Seismology Office, and he hasn't been tasked for any clandestine missions for a while. The man who gave him these missions, Pompeii Mudd, seems to have forgotten him. Or not. Mudd, who is on no organizational chart but appears to be connected to everyone, needs Tony one more time. He wants to take down a triple agent, Etel Rosenberg, who is ensconced in the Israeli Embassy. The Israelis are content to watch and wait for Rosenberg to make a mistake. Mudd isn't. Mudd devises a complicated plan to make Tony, who is privy to several Top Secret projects, a prospect for blackmail and extortion. This state has to be made known to Rosenberg. The message runs through the wife of the commander at Andrews Air Force Base and a Jewish-Italian mobster from Baltimore. It also involves, as the paramour in a staged illicit affair, Maggie Faberge. Maggie is an otherwise innocent secretary at the Naval Oceanographic Office, where Tony maintains a secure vault. Their little play leads from a reception at the Andrews Officer's Club to an apparent tryst in Saint Louis, and back to Washington. It's believable because Tony and Maggie have a history together. And Tony carries the ghost of another old flame. Amanda keeps a former hard drinker sober. Keeping him safe is the job of some highly competent bodyguards, shadows that only Tony recognizes. There's no rest for the contra-wicked. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.

Antoninus Gyro (Tony Hero), Major, USAF, is drafted into the secret agent business once again, this time not by the CIA, but by an unknown somebody in Washington. At least someone wants him, because no one at Los Angeles Air Force station does. And while Tony would rather just keep woking on the mathematics of satellite orbits, and the mystery recruiter in Washington probably means more of that clandestine stuff, order are orders. In a way, he gets his wish. His main job will be mathematical advisor on two Top Secret satellite programs. His cover job will be Chief of the Air Force Seismology Office. And one other thing. His graveyard shift will be romancing a group of pretty women to find out which one is a bad guy. And it isn't a woman from his past, whom he knows is a bad guy, and who shows up just to complicate things. This item is printed on demand.
