L'atlante offre una preziosa sintesi dei dati, raccolti fino al 1901, circa la popolazione del regno: distribuzione geografica e sociale, livello d'istruzione, caratteristiche fisiche, stato di salute, malformazioni e difetti congeniti, malattie, livelli di natalità, riconoscimenti e abbandoni, mortalità infantile, cause di morte naturale o meno, emigrazioni, migrazioni interne. L'autore, il medico Enrico Raseri, fu uno dei pionieri della statistica in Italia, insegnò Demografia e Statistica medica a Roma e lavorò con Luigi Bodio alla Direzione Generale di Statistica del Regno (antecedente dell'ISTAT), per la quale curò gli studi relativi alla statistica della popolazione e alla sanità pubblica, e si occupò tra l'altro dei censimenti del 1881 e del 1901.
