Pages clean, unmarked, binding tight. Covers, spine, page edges, and extremities with a very little general wear except bottom right corner of front cover wich has 3 creases. The author challenged the racial conventions of his time, creating black characters who would play major roles in some of his novels. None of these characters breaks the mold of conventional black portraiture in postbellum southern fiction more forcefully than Dan, a mulatto slave, written in 1896.
