[postal cancellation Palo Alto, CA,18 April 1934]. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War Scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). "Dear Mr. Gates," she pens handsomely in black ink, "I'm sorry, but I was in China -- hence delay," signing boldly. Thomas (1892-1981) was a renowned journalist, author and professional traveler well known to film fans as the voice of "Movietone News" for many years and later host of television travel series. Norris (1880-1966) was a California newspaper columnist and for a half century one of the most popular, prolific and highly-paid novelists in the U.S., cranking out almost 100 novels between 1911 ("Mother," her first) and 1955 ("Through a Glass Darkly," her last).
