Seller: Donald A. Heald Rare Books (ABAA), New York, NY, U.S.A.
Folio. (16 1/2 x 13 inches). 48 pp. 21 lithographed plates printed by Hullmandel, including additional title. Contemporary brown morocco elaborately decorated gilt and blind by Westley, Son and Jarvis, all edges gilt; yellow endpapers, scattered foxing as is usual for this work The preferred issue with an additional plate in a very fine contemporary full morocco binding. This visually striking and richly detailed work offers a vivid portrayal of the distinctive costumes and cultural life in Turkey and Italy. The present work is not only an exploration of costume, but a window into the daily lives, occupations, and social structures of 19th-century Turkish and Italian peoples. The illustrations capture the attire of both men and women, from Ottoman sultans and their retinues to rural Italian villagers. The accompanying text by Reeve provides informative and engaging descriptions of the settings and the significance of the depicted costumes, offering insight into both the historical context and cultural meaning behind the garments. Blackmer writes, "About half the plates (the Turkish subjects) have been lithographed from drawings which appeared as steel engravings in Walsh's Constantinople and the Scenery of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor, 1838. Allom had contributed to that work along with several other artists, and Fisher and Son were also its publishers. The plates here have been lithographed by Hullmandel. Allom traveled in the East probably between 1836-1837." Colas 86; Lipperheide 1282; Blackmer 1400; Blackmer Sale 938; Vinet 2128; Hiler p.19.
