FIRST EDITION. Half title; the odd spot. Sl. later pebble-grained blue cloth, lettered in gilt, title on spine & 'ELLEL GRANGE' on front board. Ink signature of Helen C. Preston on leading f.e.p. A nice copy. Not in Glover & Greene. Hubin p.24, who lists three titles by this author. BL only on Copac and OCLC; OCLC records two co…pies of an 1890 New York edition titled 'Police Sergeant Power; the story of a crime' at UNC Chapel Hill and the University of Alberta. A man devotes himself to solving the 'mysterious and brutal' murder of a young woman that had taken place in a seaside town several years previous: 'patiently and resolutely he set himself to work to solve the difficult enigma; to throw light upon what was darkness, and to clear up what was incomprehensible'. Ellel Grange is a grand house in Lancashire built in 1858 by the Sandemann family; this volume, originally a cheap paperback, was evidently bound for the library.
