Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine (see desciption). Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine (see description). Cornelius Krieghoff (illustrator). First Edition. ----------( 1st printing of the First Edition ) ---hardcover, a Near Fine example, small nick on lower edge of board (really very small), in a Near Fine dustjacket, ---this copy has been signed without inscription by REID and GAGNON, 323 pages, colour and b&w illustrations throughout, ---"Cornelius Krieghoff, born in Amsterdam in 1815 and an immigrant to North America about 1835, is Canada's most famous nineteenth-century artist. The familiarity of his paintings may make it surprising that this book is published on the occasion of the very first retrospective exhibition of his work. We have known Krieghoff best for his affectionate depictions of everyday life among the habitants and First Nations residents of what is now Quebec. This project illuminates his considerable skill and narrative power as a painter, while revealing his relationship to his adopted country as it evolved from colony to nation. --Kriegoff: Images of Canada features essays by three distinguished writers, and all 152 works from the exhibition are reproduced in colour. The nineteenth century in Europe and North America witnessed an artistic shift away from neoclassicism's monumental canvases of historical subjects to the intimacy, the dailiness, the humour and anecdotal warmth of genre painting. In Canada, as elsewhere, this shift occurred as a middle class, agent of growing commerce and industry, was rising to prominence. --Situating the artist within the rich context of the period, Dennis Reid's essay focuses on Krieghoff as a major Canadian cultural figure in the years leading up to Confederation, showing his work to be as much shaped by his new homeland as his images indelibly shaped future public perception of his time and place. Ramsay Cook's essay presents a fresh reading of these iconic images in light of the underlying social attitudes and political issues of the day, especially as seen by a newcomer. Francois-Marc Gagnon's text examines the sources in European tradition of Krieghoff's images of French Canadians and Native peoples and considers the interpretation of his paintings by the influential Quebec art historian Gerard Morisset. Raymond Vezina contributes a useful, illustrated chronology, and Arlene Gehmacher provides detailed and fully researched catalogue entries."---, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo /// SIGNED ---GUARANTEED to be AVAILABLE/// ---size is approximate (generally within 1/8 inch)--- Size: 11.5w x 10.75h Inches. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good -. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good -. Roger Peterson, J. C. Harrison, Don Eckelberry, David Reid-Henry, Albert Gilbert, C. E. Kelley, Guy Coheleach, Lloyd Sandford, Malcolm Ellis, Cornelius Ward, J. G. Williams (illustrator). First As Such. Eagles, Hawks, and Falcons of the World(Volumes I-II, combined in ONE book) by Leslie Brown and Dean Amadon was published by The Wellfleet Press, Secaucus, New Jersey, in 1989. This 8 1/2" X 11", 945-page (glossy pages), 2"-thick offering is an ex-library copy in VG-/VG- condition. The book, except for the presence of some of the standard library markings and a missing front loose end page, is in very well-preserved shape, physically. (Perhaps because since it's a reference book it spent it's time in the library in the Reference section or Memorial Book Room.) Two of the very last pages preceding back endpapers have smallish creases in their upper right corners. It has the look, generally, of a book much newer than its 23 years. Its dust jacket, too, looks quite nice/well taken care of over its lifetime, but does exhibit a smallish, white label at the bottom of the jacket's spine, sporting its Dewey Decimal number. From front inside jacket flap, "This book, the most authoritative currently available, aims to bring together in one work all the available knowledge on the diurnal birds of prey of the world. Many of the birds of prey have been exhaustively studied in recent years, and a great deal is known about their habits. Others, especially those living in the forests of South America and the Far East, remain virtually unknown. .The information is presented in two parts. First, a series of introductory chapters covering taxonomy, morphology, senses, flight, hunting methods, food and feeding, migration, various aspects of the breeding cycle, economics and relations with man, including falconry. Following, then, are generic and species accounts in systematic order. Throughout, over 125 color paintings by some of the world's most esteemed nature artists illuminate the text and evoke a true picture of the birds in their habitat. Each is accompanied by detailed identification keys." Besides Mr. Peterson, some of the other artists' work on such beautiful display include J.C. Harrison, David Reid-Henry, C.E. Talbot Kelley, Lloyd Sandford, Cornelius J. Ward, and five others. Also included are two each of a Table of Contents and List of Illustrations, a common Bibliography(spanning almost 6 pages), and two Indexes(one for each of the two volumes). By the way, there also some eighty-four maps, drawn in black and white, preceding the just-mentioned Bibliography, illustrating/indicating the ranges, worldwide, of every genus of the birds of prey described/discussed/detailed throughout this two-books-in-one, hefty offering.
