Book First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. 1st Edition. Produced for the author, UK. Not dated but c.1947-1950. Size: 38.1cm x 30.4cm. Photograph album. Produced by Major-General Reid in small numbers for presentation. Includes a ?With Greetings And Best Wishes? card tipped onto the front paste-down signed by Reid. Comprises 40 informal tissue-guarded photographic portraits of some of the officers and men who served with the Division and 117 tissue-guarded photographs of the Division in action. The photographs are nearly all 11.5cm x 8.2cm with only a couple being slightly smaller. The majority of the photographs cover North Africa, The Middle East and Mesopotamia and Italy. Formed in January 1941 at Ahmednagar from three Indian Infantry Brigades under the command of Major-General W. A. K. Fraser, the Division first saw action in the Anglo-Iraqi War. Major-General William ?Bill? Slim soon took command and moved up the river Euphrates and captured Baghdad and the Mosul oilfields and proceeded into Syria. It was further involved in the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran before returning to Iraq under a new commanding officer, Major-General Thomas ?Pete? Rees in March 1942. The Division next saw action in North Africa as part of the Western Desert Campaign with units involved at El Adem and Sidi Rezegh during the Battle of Gazala. As the Eighth Army retreated towards El Alamein, the Division was itself forced to retreat from Libya and tasked with defending the town of Mersa Matruh on the coast, it lost 40% of its forces either killed or captured in the ensuing battle with most of the survivors being sent to the Nile Delta to recover. Part of the Division reformed though and took part in the First Battle for El Alamein. Command then passed to Major General Alan Bruce Blaxland and the Division was then posted to defend Cyprus. Command then changed again to Major General Wilfrid Lewis Lloyd whereupon it located to the Middle East being joined by the 1st Greek Brigade and the 20th and 25th Indian Brigades. Following the death of Lloyd in a car accident whilst preparing for the Italian campaign, command then passed to Major General Denys Whitehorn Reid. The Division would spend the remainder of WWII engaged in operations in Italy seeing action in the Battle of Monte Cassino, the occupation of Umbertide, the capture of Citta di Castello, Montone and Monte Altuccia and involvement in Operations Olive and Grapeshot on The Gothic Line. The Division suffered heavy casualties but earned many battle honours and decorations before final victory in Italy and the end of World War II in Europe in May 1945. Major-General Reid remained commander of the Division until 1947 when it was disbanded. (Source: Wikipedia) The album is slightly dusty and rubbed to the edges but is in very nice condition indeed with the photographs clearly labelled and in fine condition. Scarce. Signed by Author(s).
